Hunger vs Starve
Though both speak about the need of food, there is a notable difference between hunger and starve. If we look at hunger and starve as only words several facts become clear about the two words. Hunger is used as a noun as well as a verb while starve is only used as a verb. The noun form of starve is starvation. The word hunger has its origin in the Old English word hungor while the word starve has its origin in the Old English word steorfan. When it comes to starve there are even phrases such as starve the beast that is used in US.

The word hunger is used in the sense of ‘appetite’ that is caused by the process of emptying of the stomach. One of the main differences between hunger and starve is that hunger is a natural process that takes place as a physiological function of the body. Hunger can be satiated by the sufficient intake of solid and liquid food.

On the other hand, starve is a kind of exercise by which you train yourself to live without food. This is the main difference between the two words. The word starve is used in the interesting sense of ‘fasting’. Sometimes people conduct what is called as a fast in order to lodge their protest against some wrongdoing or crime. They declare that they would be fasting unto death. Unlike hunger that is a natural process , starve is an artificial process brought about the will and the wish of a person. It is important to know that poverty too results in starving. In other words, it can be said that people affected by poverty in different countries of the world starve due to lack of money to purchase food. This is not self-inflicted though. In such cases too people starve to death. It is due to the deplorable condition of poverty. In this case people are unable to satiate their hunger. Moreover, an action of starving can be ended by the intake of water or solid food. Sometimes starving is undertaken as part of a diet plan too in order to reduce the body weight and the bad LDL cholesterol content in the body. Starving amounts to low intake of calories on a daily basis.
