Regular car and hybrid car belong to two different generations in the automotive industry. Regular car has gradually matured over time with technological inventions and different customer requirements. Even though, hybrid is the latest technology, most of the people are still using regular cars due to some unfavorable facts in hybrid cars. However, hybrid cars have already been considered as the optimal solution for most of the topical problems. Main difference between regular and hybrid cars is the nature of the two engines. Regular car has a gasoline (petrol) or diesel engine while hybrid car has both gas powered engine and an electric battery pack.

Regular Cars

Regular cars, usually referred as normal gasoline or diesel cars, have changed over the years introducing many new inputs by different manufactures. For instance, during 1800’s there were no electric start engines for cars. During those days, drivers had to spin the flywheel themselves by hand and start the car. Later, the electric start engines were introduced, and things became easier.

A regular car has a combustion engine, and because of the combustion, an energy conversion is taking place so that the car can be moved. A regular car follows this basic technology. Regular cars can be categorized by the combustion engine used. There are several kinds of combustion engines such as four strokes, two strokes, single stroke, multiple strokes etc. Depending on the different purposes, manufacturers use different combustion engines in the different car models. The regular cars differ in fuel performance with different fuels, because the performance of a gasoline engine differs from a diesel engine. Most common engine problems occur in a regular car is because of substandard fuel mix, faults in sparks, and lack of compression. However, diesel engines do not have a spark plug, so that faults in sparks cannot be observed in diesel engines.

Hybrid Cars

Hybrid technology is the best solution today to the green house effect produced by vehicles. Gasoline cars emit a large amount of carbon dioxide into the environment due to combustion of fuel. Hybrid cars have gasoline engine, as well as, electric motor and a set of batteries. Here, the gasoline engine is relatively smaller than the regular gasoline car engine. In addition, it uses some advanced technologies in order to reduce emissions and increase the efficiency. The key feature in the hybrid car is the electric motor. When the car is accelerated, the electric motor draws the required energy from the batteries. At the same time, as the car slows down it acts as a generator and returns the energy to the battery. The batteries also play a vital role here, they help to deliver energy, as well as, store energy.

Two different technologies are used in hybrid cars. One is known as parallel hybrid system. Here, both the gasoline engine and electric motor can turn the transmission (The system that transmits power from engine towards the wheels), and the transmission turns the wheels then. The other technology is known as series hybrid system. Here, gasoline engine does not directly powers the engine. Instead, it has a generator, which is a kind of an electric motor other than the main electric motor. This generator can either charge the batteries or power the main electric motor, which powers the transmission. Honda Insight is an example for a parallel hybrid system.

What is the difference between Hybrid and Regular Cars?

• Hybrid cars have a better mileage than regular cars. Normally hybrid cars have mileage of 35km per liter while regular cars have only about 15km per liter. (approximately)

• Hybrid cars are more expensive than regular gasoline cars.

• Hybrid gasoline engine is relatively smaller than a regular gasoline engine.

• Hybrid cars have much more efficiency than regular cars. Because, when the engine is small, the torque obviously is less.

• Hybrid cars are more eco-friendly than regular cars. Because the emission of carbon dioxide is less than that in regular cars.
