The term jacket is coined from the word undercoat since jacket used to be a term that refers to specific types of undercoats. Jackets also sometimes refer to suits. Jackets are formal and are often paired with trousers and used in formal occasions. It appears to be a little more tailored and dressy and is often with padding and sometimes with lining, constructed lapels, piped pockets and bone or buttons.

A jacket is more tailored, classy and clean than a coat. They are more sophisticated and are typically worn for special occasions. For fashion aficionados, wearing a jacket means matching such with the trousers.

Coats used to mean a strong item of clothing that protects an individual from attacks. But eventually, it became more of a fashion item. It is now used by almost everyone. Its main purpose is to add supplementary warmth. coats are more casual and are most widely used in sports, thus the term sports coat.

Coats are usually made from heavier fabric and the padding is not very visible. They have a more relaxed feel and are mostly worn for casual occasions. A coat does not need to be matched with the rest of the outfit.

Although relatively different in style and timing of use, both jackets and coats aim to provide comfort to the user.
