It was in 1930 in the Dictionary of Color that the name was first used to refer to a color that was a pale variety of violet. There are many groups of hues that appear reddish blue, and lavender is one of these hues. In fact, it would be better to categorize lavender as pale purple. The thing to remember with lavender is that blue tone dominates rather than red, so it appears to be bluish than red. There can be many different shades in the range of lavender that can be made by increasing red or by increasing blue in the color.
