Purple

The name purple has been derived from the Latin purpura that seems to have come from a dye obtained from the mucus secretion of a type of snail. Purple is a color obtained by mixing red and blue colors. It is a magical and mysterious color, used by not just the royalties but also the pieties. The color purple has been used not just by the Roman Emperors but also Catholic Bishops.

Violet is the color that is visible in the color spectrum and mixing red and blue actually gives violet. However, when the shade is such that it is nearer to blue than red, we are talking about purple shade. Violet is the color that is closer to red than blue.

Lavender

Lavender is the name of a kind of flowers. It continued to be applied to these flowers till recent times. It was in 1930 in the Dictionary of Color that the name was first used to refer to a color that was a pale variety of violet. There are many groups of hues that appear reddish blue, and lavender is one of these hues. In fact, it would be better to categorize lavender as pale purple. The thing to remember with lavender is that blue tone dominates rather than red, so it appears to be bluish than red. There can be many different shades in the range of lavender that can be made by increasing red or by increasing blue in the color.
