Leotards and bathing suits may now have been used interchangeably but what most people don’t bother to know is the fact that these two garments are different from each other. People may think that they are just the same in the sense that they are used in swimming.

Leotards

The leotard is a tight-fitting one piece garment which cover one’s torso but leaving the legs free. The name originated from its inventor, the French performer Jules Leotard. Leotards are usually worn by figure skaters, dancers, circus performers, acrobats and many others. Leotards vary in the sense that some are long-sleeved, others are either short-sleeved or sleeveless. When Mr. Leotard created this garment, it was designed for men’s use only.

Bathing Suit

Bathing suit on the other hand is designed for one to wear while doing various types of water sports including swimming, surfing, water polo, or diving. A bathing can also be worn in other activities under the sun like sun bathing. Not only are they worn in beaches and pools but they are worn during body building and beauty contests. There are a lot of modern variations to this garment.

These two garments can be confusing to the one looking at it but one may need to know that they are entirely different from each other. Leotard is commonly used in most stage performances, as mentioned above; but bathing suits are mostly used in events and activities related to water. Jules Leotards made the garment to be used for men alone; bathing suits were made with gender in mind, . There are three major type of leotards; sleeveless, short-sleeved and long-sleeved leotards. Bathing suit has different types too, the top three types being, men’s, women’s and unisex suits.

One should realize that leotards and bathing suits are made and manufactured for different purposes.
