The interesting thing about participating to an event like Mobile World Congress is that you get to lay your hands upon devices before they are even released. The hard truth is that, it’ll be a couple of months when they are released and even so, the global release date is hard to catch up with. So we are bringing you the details about products you’re going to lay your hand on within the span of next year. Sometimes, they come with a release date, sometimes the representatives guarantee an early release, and sometimes you have to wonder whether it would make it to the market at all. The first device we are going to talk about today is tagged with a specific release date, at least for United Kingdom and a price tag, as well. LG Optimus 4X HD is to be released in the coming June, and we are eagerly waiting for that to set up a bar to define the smartphone. LG Optimus 4X HD is going to be one of the best smartphones in 2012.

The next smartphone is from a major competitor of LG and, it was announced at the MWC, as well. HTC One X would really make a great rival for Optimus 4X HD at a glance because they are more or less alike. The HTC One X is a member of the new HTC One series and One S and One V was also announced with One X. We will look at the specs of these handsets individually and compare them with each other for you to make the optimal purchasing decision.

LG Optimus 4X HD

Like all high end smartphones, LG Optimus 4X HD has a glamorous look. It doesn’t have curved edges like the usual design, but that really doesn’t make the phone uncomfortable to hold either. We don’t know the exact dimensions of this handset, but it’s scored at 8.9mm thickness. It has 4.7 inches HD-IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at a pixel density of 312ppi. The screen is fortified with Corning Gorilla Glass, and the display panel is top notch. You can use it in the broad daylight without any problem and the clarity of the images and texts would be intact. The high pixel density means the texts on your screen would be crisp like the text on a printed paper. It is said to have 16B of internal storage although we don’t know whether Optimus 4X HD has the option to expand storage using a microSD card.

The LG Optimus 4X HD is powered by 1.5GHz Cortex A9 quad core processor on top of Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset and ULP GeForce GPU with 1GB of RAM. The operating system is Android v4.0 IceCreamSandwich and is optimized to utilize the multiple cores of the processor in an energy efficient manner. This hardware setup is the best one can find in the mobile market with the quad core processor and Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset. With this smartphone in your hand, the caliber of multitasking that is possible is unlimited. The optics is scored at the usual 8MP bar including autofocus and LED flash along with Geo tagging. It can also capture 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. The 1.3MP front camera is useful for the purpose of video conferencing. LG Optimus 4X HD stay connected using HSDPA, and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n ensures continuous connectivity. It can also share the internet connection by hosting a wi-fi hotspot, and the ability to stream rich media content to your Smart TV wirelessly using DLNA comes in handy when you want to entertain someone. It has a relatively large battery rated at 2150mAh, and we can expect a usage of 8-9 hours or more from that.

HTC One X

HTC One X is indeed the ace of the lot. It is filled with power that is waiting to burst out just like a beast. It follows the unique and ergonomically sound design pattern of HTC with curved edges and three touch buttons at the bottom. It comes in either Black cover or White cover although I rather prefer the purity of the White cover. It has 4.7 inches Super IPS LCD 2 Capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at a pixel density of 312ppi. It is rather thinner although not the thinnest in the market scoring a thickness of 9.3mm, and it has a weight of 130g, which is equally ideal for a short duration or a long duration.

These may sound like pretty trivial features for an Android smartphone, but this beast comes with a 1.5GHz Quad Core processor on top of Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset and 1GB RAM with ULP GeForce GPU. We are positive that the benchmarks will skyrocket with HTC One X. The beast is tamed by Android OS v4.0 IceCreamSandwich which we believe is suitable for handling multi core processors effectively, thus enabling HTC One X to attain its full thrust. HTC One X is somewhat short with the memory with 32GB internal storage without an option to expand, yet, still it’s a lot of memory for a phone. The UI is certainly not the Vanilla Android; rather it’s a variant of HTC Sense UI. In the perspective of usability, we see the normal unique advantages of IceCreamSandwich being featured here, as well.

HTC has given some thought to this handset because it also has 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash that can capture 1080p HD videos at 30 frames per second including stereo sound and video stabilization. The interesting feature is that HTC claims you can capture a snapshot even while you’re capturing 1080p HD video, which is simply awesome. It also comes with 1.3MP front camera bundled together with Bluetooth v3.0 for the purpose of video conferencing. It features HSDPA connectivity up to 21Mbps, which is great. The Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n enables continuous connectivity and wi-fi sharing through the ability to host a wi-fi hotspot. It also has built-in DLNA, which enables you to stream rich media content to your SmartTV. We assume the HTC’s claim of having processing power to support a streaming video on the SmartTV while you’re on a call is not an exaggeration.

Apart from these facts, we know that HTC One X comes with 1800mAh battery, and to be on a safe margin, we can assume the usage time to be somewhere around 6-7 hours.

Conclusion

In essence, both of these smartphones are almost the same. They have the same processor and chipset, GPU as well as the RAM. We can’t expect them to have the same performance because none of them comes with Vanilla Android, but it’s unlikely that the UI modifications to create a substantial performance gap. So for the sake of argument, we can assume them to have the same performance benchmarks. The display panels differ slightly although both are IPS LCD panels. This is unlikely to be noticed by a general user for both display panels are state of the art. They feature the same resolution and the same pixel density, so the crispness of the texts and images would be essentially the same. They are bound to have the same sizes, but Optimus 4X HD is slightly thicker than the HTC One X. Thus, they are virtually similar apart from two key features.

Optimus 4X HD will have a 2150mAh battery that would dramatically increase the battery usage time. We have to pay attention to this since the quad core processor is bound to squeeze the battery for power more than dual cores and thus 1800mAh conventional battery seems somewhat below the ratings. To compensate that, HTC One X comes with the ability to capture 1080p video and images simultaneously. This would be a new experience and well worth in the arena of fast pace imagery. Thus, the purchasing decision comes down to these two features because you can choose the smartphone based on these two and all of the other specs would be the same. The price is also going to be a differentiating factor, although we expect both to be priced in the same range.
