Difference Between Living and Family Room

Living vs Family Room

We hear the words living room and family room so frequently that it seems they are commonplace words and everybody understands the differences and nuances of the two words. But the crux of the matter is that, the demarcation between the two has blurred somehow in recent times because most modern homes have both inside them, and kids hardly care about the more formal living room. There are homes in which owners maintain the more stylish and more formal living room along with a more relaxed, more comfortable family room. Let us take a closer look at the concepts of the two rooms.

Family Room

Well, to begin with the name family room gives away its meaning and usage. It is a large room inside the home that is connected to kitchen, bathrooms and other rooms like bedrooms, and is used by the family as a place to get together and have some relaxing time and fun together. As it is meant for relaxation, the design and furniture will be more comfortable than being stylish, and it is common to see recliners and couches along with entertainment gadgets in a family room. The atmosphere of a family room is informal, or in other words, casual. Most of the time, watching TV is one activity that dominates other activities in family room. Listening to music and playing board games are other common activities performed in family. Kids also prefer to take their books to read in the presence of parents who pass their time reading books, newspapers, and magazines in family room. In a majority of cases, family room has an opening to backyard or garden to make it more comfortable for the inmates of the house.

Living Room

A living room is one place in the home that is meant to take guests into for formal talks and discussions. It is rarely used, and is reserved to entertain guests and visitors. Guests often have drinks in living room, but it really beats one as to why a guest room would be labeled living room. Living room is also sometime called front room, because of the propensity to be located in the front of the house. The ambience of a living room spells style and elegance, and the focus is more on looks than functionality. The casual comfort of the family room is missing with the furniture being more upright. The walls of living room are seen decorated with modern art, whereas it is common to see family portraits in a family room.
