Difference Between Magnetic Field and Magnetic Flux

Magnetic Field vs Magnetic Flux

In the space surrounding a magnetic object there are magnetic lines emanating in a particular arrangement referred to as the magnetic field of the object. These magnetic lines in a given area are described using a magnetic flux. Forces are exerted on moving electrical charges around these magnetic fields. Moving charged particles get deflected along the direction of the magnetic lines. Some people are confused by the concepts of magnetic field and magnetic flux because of similarities between them. However there are differences that will be highlighted in this article.

The density of magnetic flux lines is deeply related to the strength of magnetic field. As they are directly proportional, we can assume the strength of magnetic field with the density of magnetic flux lines. These flux lines are the densest at magnetic poles, and as one moves away from the poles, the magnetic flux lines diverge and become less dense. This density of magnetic flux is a vector quantity that characterizes the magnetic field. The force experienced by a moving charged particle along a magnetic field is given by the following equation.

F = qv X B = qvB

Where q is the charge of the particle, v is its velocity and B is the magnetic flux vector.

The relation between magnetic field and magnetic flux is given by the following equation

B = u X H = uH

Where B is the magnetic flux, H is the density of magnetic field and u is the permeability of the medium.

There is another equation relating magnetic flux and magnetic field

Magnetic Flux = B X A =BA

Where B is the magnetic field and A is area perpendicular to the magnetic field

In brief:

Difference Between Magnetic Field and Magnetic Flux

• Every magnetic object has a magnetic field in its surrounding area that is felt by moving charged particle.

• Magnetic field is described using magnetic lines emanating in a set pattern

• Magnetic flux is a related concept that describes the strength of magnetic field

• Magnetic flux is given by the product of magnetic field and the perpendicular are that it penetrates.
