Difference Between MAPP Gas and MAP-Pro

The key difference between MAPP gas and MAP-pro gas is that MAPP gas is mainly composed of methylacetylene, propadiene and propane molecules whereas MAP-pro gas only contains propylene and propane.

Both MAPP gas and Map-pro gas are important as fuel. Therefore, we can name them as fuel gasses when these two substances are gaseous at under ordinary conditions and contains hydrocarbon compounds, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or a mixture of these compounds. Gases like these are important sources of potential heat energy or light energy that we can readily transmit and distribute through pipe systems.

What is MAPP Gas?

MAPP gas is a trademark for the fuel gas containing a mixture of methylacetylene and propadiene. This trademark was registered under The Linde Group, and it previously belonged to the Dow Chemical Company. This name of this fuel gas comes from its original composition – methylacetylene, propadiene and propane.

We can use MAPP gas in combination with oxygen gas for heating purposes, soldering, brazing, and welding. This is due to the high flame temperature of this gas in the presence of oxygen gas (compared to the acetylene gas we use inn welding processes). Moreover, MAPP gas has the advantage of not needing to be diluted or not needing a special container filler during its transport. Thus, this allows us to transport a great volume of this gas at the same given weight. Besides, this gas is safe for use.

In both its gaseous and liquid forms, MAPP gas is colourless.  This gas has a fishy odour (at high concentrations) that resembles the odour of acetylene gas. Moreover, this gas is toxic if inhaled at high concentrations.

Earlier, this gas was considered as a safe and easy-to-use substitute for acetylene. However, the production of this gas was discontinued because of the cost of production. E.g. this gas is about one and a half times expensive compared to the cost of propane.

What is MAP-Pro?

MAP-pro is a fuel gas composed only of propylene and propane. The recommended applications for this fuel gas include the use in soldering and brazing applications. When considering the composition of this gas, it contains about 99.5% propylene and 0.5% of propane. Similar to MAPP gas, this fuel gas is also a colourless gas, and it has a “hydrocarbon” odour. The gas is slightly water-soluble and is extremely flammable; therefore, we need to take extreme care when handling this gas.

What is the Difference Between MAPP Gas and MAP-Pro?

MAPP gas and Map-pro gas are important fuel gases. The key difference between MAPP gas and MAP-pro gas is that MAPP gas is mainly composed of methylacetylene, propadiene and propane molecules whereas MAP-pro gas contains propylene and propane only. MAPP gas contains about 48% methylacetylene, 23% of propadiene, and 27% of propane, while MAP-Pro gas contains 99.5% of propylene and 0.5% of propane. Moreover, MAPP gas is not very flammable while MAP-Pro is extremely flammable. In addition, MAPP gas has an acetylene-like odour while Map-pro gas has a “hydrocarbon” odour.

Summary – MAPP Gas vs MAP-Pro

Furl gases are important sources of potential energy, such as heat or light energy. MAPP gas and MAP-pro gas are such two fuel gasses. MAPP gas is a trademark for the fuel gas containing a mixture of methylacetylene and propadiene. MAP-pro is a fuel gas composed of only propylene and propane. Therefore, the key difference between MAPP gas and MAP-pro gas is that MAPP gas is mainly composed of methylacetylene, propadiene and propane molecules, whereas MAP-pro gas contains propylene and propane only.
