Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is one degree course that is very popular among the students all over the world because of career opportunities it makes available to those who complete it from a reputed business school. However, there is one similar degree, known as Executive MBA, which is not so popular but equally important in terms of value and opportunities. People do not know the differences between these two degree programs, that is MBA and Executive MBA, which is rather unfortunate. This article will attempt to highlight the differences between MBA and Executive MBA to enable people to choose one of the two depending upon their circumstances as well as requirements to further their careers.
Executive MBA is just like MBA program and is typically offered by the same business school that is offering regular MBA courses. However, the two programs are run by two full fledged departments and not clubbed in a single department. Executive MBA program has been designed to fulfill the aspirations of busy executives who do not have this reputed degree in front of their name and desire to earn it but do not find time to complete a full time MBA course. These programs are targeted for middle rung executives with around 10 years of work experience whereas no work experience is required to pursue an MBA course. This difference means that students are mostly middle aged professionals and this requires a different set of faculty to tackle them.
For obvious reasons, there is variation in the curriculum of these types of MBA courses. While in regular MBA classes, students learn more about core business practices, the focus in EMBA programs is on leadership and management of an organization at the level of a senior executive. While normal MBA aspirants need to clear GMAT, there is no such requirement for EMBA. The duration of the two courses also differs. While MBA students have to dedicate full two years to the school, EMBA students require to put in 15-25 class hours per week in a course that is of 20 month duration. EMBA has been so designed to accommodate the needs of busy executives who cannot take sufficient time out from their schedules for the school.
The cost of the two MBA programs also has a difference. Whereas MBA from any top business school may cost around $100000, EMBA is cheaper in comparison and may cost around $60000.
