Difference Between MILC and DSLR Camera

MILC vs DSLR Camera

DSLR cameras and MIL cameras are two types of cameras encountered in photography. These two designs have their cons and pros. This article will try to address the issues of their basic designs, their cons and pros, similarities and finally the differences between DSLR cameras and MIL cameras.

DSLR camera

DSLR stands for the term digital single lens reflex. DSLR cameras are an advanced type of digital cameras. A digital camera is a device, which uses a matrix of light sensitive electronic components as the sensor plate in order to capture the image. Sensor technologies, such as CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) and CCD (Charged Coupled Devices), are used in DSLR cameras. These data are then transformed into a binary bit pattern, which is stored in the memory of the camera. Image storage formats are of two types; one is where the image is compressed before storing. Formats such as JPEG, GIF, and TIFF are such compressing formats. Formats like RAW record the image without any alteration; therefore, high quality is acquired, but this causes a lesser number of photos per memory card. It uses a separate lens and a body both of which are very expensive than normal point and shoot digital cameras. These lenses are of high quality and have a very large lens opening than the normal cameras. Therefore, the sharpness of the images is significantly high. These lenses and camera bodies have fully manual and automatic control over the photo, ranging from white balance to focus points.

MILC

MILC stands for mirror-less interchangeable lens camera. MIL cameras are a new type of cameras, which falls between digital compact cameras and DSLR cameras. The TTL (through the lens) focusing system of the DSLR camera uses the light entering from the lens to focus the image. This process includes a mirror, which reflects the light to the penta-prism where it is reflected to the viewfinder of the camera. The MIL camera does not have a mirror like the DSLR camera. MIL cameras are designed to have large sensors in small bodies. The sensor of a MIL camera is almost the size of that of a DSLR camera. However, the TTL focusing system is removed along with the mirror. The MIL camera does not have a TTL viewfinder. MIL camera will look like a compact digital camera with a large sensor and a large lens. The idea of the MIL camera is to deliver the photo quality of a DSLR camera in a more compact body. The main problem with the MIL camera design is the lack of TTL viewfinder. This also reduces the battery life since live view is always active on a MIL camera.

What is the difference between MIL camera and DSLR camera?

• DSLR camera has a TTL viewfinder whilst the MIL camera only features a LCD viewfinder.

• The focusing system of the MIL camera is based on contrast detection; while the focusing system of DSLR cameras is based on the more accurate and sophisticated phase detection system.
