Motorola and Samsung normally comes up with the same kind of handsets, to address the same niche market at the same time frames, which makes them take some hard yet stiff decisions about the competition. They are on again for the month of February with a new release that challenges each other. This partnership in competitive markets has yielded them with a lot of advantages compared to the drawbacks, and it is integral to the sustainable development of the handsets from both of the manufacturers.

So what are on for the month of February are Motorola Defy Mini and Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus. Both are for the same market and have almost identical specs. To compensate the differences in the handsets, both companies have included some cutting edge features that are not included in the other. Let us look at them individually before we make the actual comparison.

Motorola Defy Mini

The niche market this handset is addressing is the mid-range with rough usage requirements. It is said to be dust proof, water resistant and scratch resistant with Corning Gorilla glass reinforcements. Defy Mini has 3.2 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels at 180ppi pixel density. It has 600MHz processor, which I have to say is somewhat disappointing, along with 512MB RAM running on Android OS v2.3.6 Gingerbread. We can perhaps hope for an upgrade to Android OS v4.0, but that hasn’t been announced officially. Then again, it won’t probably qualify for the IceCreamSandwich upgrade due to the deficiency in processorwhich makes us somewhat doubt its performance even in Gingerbread. Hopefully Motorola must have applied some tweaks and modified the OS to work seamlessly with this setup.

Motorola Defy Mini has HSDPA connectivity for fast browsing and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity. It is also capable to act as a wi-fi hotspot which is very useful. It can also stream rich media content to your TV wirelessly thanks to DLNA functionality. The 3.15MP camera with LED flash is not much of a delight where as it only enables video recording in VGA. Thankfully it has a front camera that enables video conferencing with ease. It also has 512MB of internal storage with the ability to expand the storage using a microSD card up to 32GB. We find that, for a candy bar, Motorola Defy Mini is somewhat thicker than what we expect it to be; scoring a thickness of 12.6mm, but it sure is on the lower spectrum of weight scoring 107g. The included 1650mAh battery promises the user a talk time of 10 hours, which is very good.

Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus

Galaxy Ace Plus is the successor to Galaxy Ace. It has a bigger screen with the same resolution which means the pixel density is lesser than Ace. The 3.65 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen with 320 x 480 pixels is not much of a development considering the reduced pixel density of 158ppi. Samsung hasn’t been cautious to include their Super AMOLED panel in this new Galaxy Ace Plus either.

It comes with 1GHz processor, and the chipset wasn’t revealed in the press release. We reckon it would be a Qualcomm one, as well, like the Ace and the GPU would also be Adreno 200 series. There’s some improvement in the RAM making it 512MB, and the whole setup is controlled by Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread. The light in the horizon is that this may be entitled to an upgrade of IceCreamSandwich as Samsung bothered enough to give Galaxy Ace an upgrade to Gingerbread.

Ace Plus has 5MP camera with autofocus and LED flash with Geo tagging and Assisted GPS. The camera records video in WVGA resolution, which really isn’t good. It comes with HSDPA connectivity for browsing the internet and it also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with DLNA for wireless streaming and the ability to act as a hotspot. The 1300mAh battery will promise a talk time of 8 hours or so as per our deduction since the exact information isn’t still available.

Conclusion

We can formulate a pretty neat conclusion for this review in terms of which hand set is better. As you can see, both of them are addressed at the same market with compensating features. The only undue compensation I see in Motorola Defy is the power of the processor, which lies really low at 600MHz. Other than that, the set ups look almost the same. The interesting attraction of Motorola Defy Mini is its heavy built, been dust proof, water resistant and scratch resistant. Motorola is known for their Enterprise standard rough built, so we can count on Motorola Defy Mini in extreme situations. Therefore, if your profession makes you expose to these conditions that need special features like what Defy Mini offers, the investment is likely to be rather fruitful. Otherwise, we would prefer to invest in Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus simply because of the processor issue for we can at least expect an upgrade to Android OS v4.0 IceCreamSandwich with it.
