There are several things we expect from a smartphone. Back in the days, a smartphone was only used for the purpose of communication; that is for calling and eventually sms. However, today smartphones are widely used for everything that a computer can handle. The distinction of a smartphone actually been a phone is wearing thin these days. Instead, a smartphone is becoming everything but a mere phone. For instance, some smartphones are super handheld computational machines. Some smartphones are high end gaming devices with top notch GPUs and multi axis gyro sensors. Some smartphones are handheld offices with 128 / 256 bits encryption. Some smartphones are media players that make us enjoy any ride from point A to point B. Among these variants, some smartphones are absolutely brilliant cameras that make the camera manufacturers run out of business. In fact, these camera phones are the cause for leading camera manufacturers like Konica to diversify in to new areas.

Today, we will talk about two smartphones that are special in different segments of the smartphone market. One smartphone has a camera no other smartphone has ever had. To be precise, not even digital cameras come up to the scale of this camera, as far as I know. The other smartphone is also an innovative product associated with a blooming operating system. Both of these smartphones are from Nokia who has been down in the ratings for the last two years although they used to dominate the market back in the days. With the introduction of new models like these, we would expect them to spring back into a dominant position of the smartphone market sometime soon, as well. Let us talk about these two phones individually and then get along with the differences they have.

Nokia 808 PureView

Nokia PureView is a handset that comes in White, Black or Red and has a uniquely elegant look. It is on the thicker side of the spectrum but feels good in your hand. It measures 123.9 x 60.2 x 13.9mm in size and weighs 169g. PureView has 4.0 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels at the pixel density of 184ppi. The Nokia ClearBlack display makes the pictures on the screen look great. This handset is powered by 1.3GHz ARM 11 processor and 512MB of RAM. The operating system Nokia Belle OS which is a proprietary OS owned by Nokia. It has 16GB of internal storage with the option to expand the memory using a microSD card. The network connectivity of PureView is defined by HSDPA, and like any smartphone of today it has come with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity. It also has built-in DLNA enabling you to stream rich media content directly from your handset.

The specialty of this handset lies on its camera. Nokia 808 PureView is a host to a 41MP camera. This may seem an improbable choice, or we may even be taken wrong, but 41MP is the official announcement, which stands. As usual, it has Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and Xeon flash. The camera also has a ND filter, geo tagging and facial detection along with the main sensor of 1/1.2”. It can capture 1080p HD videos at 30 frames per second with 3x digital zoom and the front VGA camera bundled together with Bluetooth v3.0 enables the luxury of video conferencing. We just have to say that we are impressed by this camera, I mean, who wouldn’t be?

We are told that 1400mAh standard Li-ion battery will have a talk time of 11 hours, but we have to do some testing to confirm the ratings with the use of the super camera it has. We are hoping that the camera will not drain too much of juice out of the battery.

Nokia Lumia 800

Being an ambassador and representing a set of objects is not an easy task. Nokia Lumia 800 was imposed with that as its maiden duty for this smartphone was one of the Nokia’s first Windows Mobile 7.5 phones. Those were times when Nokia wasn’t making much progress in the smartphone market with their proprietary operating system Symbian. That made Nokia take a leap of faith with Microsoft and migrate their smartphone sector with Windows Mobile 7.5 Mango which has been a much anticipated release of the renowned operating system. The handset had 1.4GHz Scorpion processor on top of Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset. It came with 512MB of RAM and Adreno 205 GPU. Fortunately, Lumia 800 and the subsequent releases of the same caliber were hits on the market and at the CES 2012, Nokia Lumia line was considered as the best smartphone exhibited by cnet.

The Lumia 800 has straight edges, and that might be somewhat uncomfortable in your hands. However, it’s rather small and light. It has 3.7 inches AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors featuring a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels at a pixel density of 252ppi. It defines connectivity using HSDPA while Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n enables continuous connectivity. Nokia normally don’t leave out their phones without a good camera, and Lumia 800 is no exception. It has 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual LED flash and Geo tagging. The camera can also capture 720p videos @ 30 frames per second and Lumia 800 doesn’t have a front camera. The handset comes in Black, Cyan, Magenta and White with an interesting metro style UI. Unfortunately, Lumia 800 doesn’t have a memory expansion slot, so you would have to satisfy with 16GB of internal memory. Nokia promises a talk time of 13 hours with the standard 1450mAh battery which is pretty decent.

Conclusion

We have been talking about a smartphone that has been bestowed upon a duty of an ambassadorship and a smartphone that boasts the best camera world has ever seen in a phone. Both of these instances are unique in their own aspects and thus give us quite a time to compare against each other. However, we’ll do our best. Nokia 808 PureView has one great camera; we can guarantee that! The operating system is not that mature, and the application market is rather low for this handset. Although it has 1.3GHz processor and 512MB RAM, we have our doubts on whether that would be enough to make every operation smooth at any given instance. There is another problem associated with the display. We think Nokia should have added a display panel with better resolution to this handset for a smartphone with optics of this caliber needs a better screen. That been said, if you’re still up for this smartphone, Nokia 808 PureView will serve you the best.

On the other hand, we have the Nokia Lumia 800 which is the Windows Mobile 7.5 Mango version with the overall upper mid-range performance. The processor is good although we think Nokia could have done better with a 1GB RAM. OS was significantly improved, and the metro style UI is innovative. The display panel and resolution are good, and we are also happy about the size of this handset. We are somewhat worried about the square edges in terms of comfortably, and storage is definitely going to be a problem. The optics is good, and we are rather impressed with the battery life of Lumia 800.

Those final remarks about the two handsets would wrap up this comparison. Before you make the purchasing decision, you might want to check the prices as well, and we think Nokia 808 PureView is going to be rather very expensive with the inclusion of the super camera.
