Nokia unveiled its first Windows phone Lumia 800 running on the latest Windows Phone 7.5 (Code named as Mango) in October 2011. For the external appearance, it looks very much like Nokia N9 in design, but with a slightly smaller display (3.7”) and faster processor. It has 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM 8255 processor. On the other hand, HTC unveiled HTC Titan, a new Windows based phone at the IFA 2011 in Berlin on 1st September. It also runs the Windows Phone 7.5. Both, Nokia Lumia 800 and HTC Titan, are 3G GSM/WCDMA phones. Following is a review on the similarities and differences of the two devices.
HTC Titan
HTC Titan is a Windows Phone 7 smart phone officially announced in September 2011. The official release is expected by October 2011. HTC introduces the device both as a smart phone for work as well as entertainment.
HTC Titan is 5.18” tall and has a thickness of 0.39”. The device weighs 160 g. HTC Titan sports a reasonable 4.8” S-LCD capacitive touch screen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution. In terms of sensors, HTC Titan has an accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, a Gyro Sensor, G-Sensor, Digital compass, Proximity sensor for auto turn off and an ambient light sensor.
HTC Titan has a 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor coupled with an Adreno 205 GPU. The processing power onboard HTC Titan will make multi tasking, graphics manipulation and switching between applications more efficient. The device has a 512 MB RAM with 16 GB storage. A micro SD card slot is not available with HTC Titan. The device supports micro USB as well. In terms of connectivity, the device supports 3G UMTS/WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
HTC Titan has quite an impressive camera quality with an 8 megapixel rear facing camera with F2.2 lens, dual LED flash, and BSI sensor (for better low-light captures). The image quality of the rear camera is impressive for a camera on a smart phone. The rear-facing camera comes with auto focus as well as geo tagging and it is capable of 720p HD video recording (mp4). HTC Titan also has a 1.3 megapixel front camera for video conferencing.
Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5 (a.k.a Mango) powers HTC Titan. As a Windows Phone device, HTC Titan is coupled with tight social networking integration with Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live applications. Multimedia is categorized by Video Hub, Music Hub, and Photo Hub. Pocket Office enables viewing Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and PDF viewer files; it also enables editing Word and Excel files. In addition, handy applications such as YouTube client, predictive text input and voice memo are available with HTC Titan. Additional applications for HTC Titan can be downloaded from Windows market. Gaming experience on HTC Titan is powered by Zune.
The multimedia support on HTC Titan is impressive with full-blown audio, video and image support. The Music and Videos Hubs are powered by Zune. It allows listening to radio, download music, and listening to favourite music on the go. HTC Titan includes Dolby Mobile and SRS sound enhancement with 5.1 surround sound for video. Pictures Hub allows to view photos of the user in multiple social networking sites. The supported audio files formats are m4a, .m4b, .mp3, .wma (Windows Media Audio 9). The supported video file formats are 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m4v, .mbr, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9 and VC-1). A 3.5mm audio jack is also available on HTC Titan.
HTC Titan has a Standard battery ( Li-Ion 1600 mAh) allowing more than 11 hours of talk time in a 2G environment and 6 hours and 50 minutes with 3G WCDMA networks.
Overall, HTC Titan is a suitable phone for entertainment , gaming, social networking and work as well.
Nokia Lumia 800
Nokia Lumia 800 is one of the first Windows phone by Nokia officially announced on 26 October 2011.The device is expected to be released to the European market in October, and to other markets before the fall of 2011, but not to US this year.
At 4.59″ height and 2.41” width, Nokia Lumia 800 remains a standard size smart phone in the current smart phone market. Nokia Lumia 800 is 0.48″ thick and weighs 142 grams. It is a bit bulky in today’s standard. The device comes with a 3.7” AMOLED clear black capacitive touch screen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution. The colours are vivid, texts are sharp enough, and in overall, the display is attractive. It is designed ergonomically with a curved glass; also, as it is made out of gorilla glass, it will be scratch proof and will add additional strength. Gorilla glass seems popular among smart phone manufacturers during the 3rd quarter of 2011. In terms of sensors, Nokia Lumia 800 includes a 3D accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, Proximity sensor for auto turn-off, and an ambient light sensor.
Nokia Lumia 800 runs on a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and coupled with a hardware accelerated graphics offers a smooth performance. The device has a 512 MB SDRAM with 16 GB storage. Nokia Lumia 800 has a 8 megapixel rear facing camera with f/2.2, 28 mm wide angle, Carl Zeiss optics lens, dual LED flash, and auto focus. It is the same camera used in Nokia N9. The camera is one of the best today on Smart phones. The rear-facing camera is also capable of 720p HD video recording @30fps. The camera features include touch focus, geo tagging, and face detection. The camera works even when the phone is locked. However, disappointedly, the device does not hold a front facing camera for video chat.
Being true to a Windows phone, the multimedia content on Nokia Lumia 800 is categorized by Photo Hub, Music Hub and Video Hub. Pictures Hub allows to view photos of the user in multiple social networking sites. Nokia Music is integrated with Music Hub. One of the attractive features in Nokia Music is the customization for offline listening. With the gig finder, you can find live shows. You also have Zune that allows listening to radio, download music, and more. Lumia 800 also includes Dolby Digital Plus technology.
