Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and Xperia Arc are two Xperia series stunning devices packed with features and a departure from the love Sony showed for Symbian OS, as both these smartphones run on Android platform. Sony Ericsson, which many felt was left far behind in the race of smartphones has surprised many at the Consumer Electronics 2011 Show with its latest Xperia series of smartphones, Xperia Arc was one among that. Comparing Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and Xperia Arc, there are glaring similarities but there are also differences between these two smartphones that need to be highlighted for the benefit of buyers.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

Xperia X10 is the first smartphone from Sony that runs on Android platform. It is indeed a classic phone that has all the latest features to rub shoulders with other leading smartphones in the market. It has a very large display of 4 inch and runs of a very fast 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. Its designing is different from others as it has an angular design and a minimalist approach with very few controls. There are just three buttons for the user on the front for menu, back and home and each button has an LED behind it that glows whenever the user touches them.

Surprisingly, there is a single camera in this age of dual camera devices, and there is a 3.5mm headphone jack apart from on/off button at the top of the phone. It also has a micro USB slot at the top with a cover that frustrates while trying to uncover. There are no more controls either at the back or down, and the phone is a bit rounded at the back which makes it look a thicker at 13 mm. X10 runs on Android OS 1.6 (now available with 2.1), which means it is a little outdated in comparison to others who are using 2.2 and will switch to 2.3 shortly.

The display uses TFT technology with a resolution of 480X854 pixels and the colors are vivid with blue bring the dominant color. Above the 4” highly capacitive touch screen is an LED indicator that informs you of any incoming messages. The phone has an internal memory of 1 GB that can be expanded to 16 GB using micro SD cards. For connectivity, the phone supports both 2G and 3G, is Wi-Fi, and has Bluetooth 2.1. Web browsing is smooth with a powerful processor, and the zooming function makes it a really pleasing experience. Though it does not support flash, there is a fast YouTube browser.

The camera sports single camera of 8.1 MP with an LED flash. In addition to face detection, it also allows for face tagging.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

It is with Arc that Sony has finally given up with their human curvature obsession and this smartphone is very thin, standing at just 8 mm in the center. It has a large 4.2” display and is indeed a large phone but is surprisingly lightweight weighing just 117 gm. However, the display technology is still a bit old with LED backlit screen at a resolution of 480X854 pixels. However, assistance of patented Sony Bravia Engine makes colors look stunning.

The smartphone runs on Android Gingerbread 2.3, and has a powerful 1 GHz Scorpion processor along with Adreno 205 GPU that makes processing of graphics very fast. The phone has an 8 MP camera that takes bright and sharp pictures courtesy the legendary Sony Cyber Shot technology.

The smartphone has a little internal memory of 320 MB that can however be expanded to 8GB with the help of micro SD cards. The phone uses Sony’s TimeScape UI that enables users to get connected to their FaceBook and Twitter accounts instantly. Arc has a built in FM radio with nice reception. Gaming freaks will be disappointed as there are no pre installed games but there are free downloads of games from Gameloft.
