Sony launched two new tablets, Sony Tablet P and S, at the IFA 2011 in Berlin on 1st September. These were previously known as Sony Tablet S1 and S 2. Sony Tablet S is the latest Android Tablet by Sony running on Android 3.1/3.2. The very recently announced (1st September 2011) tablet will be available in Europe from end September 2011, and all markets worldwide by the end of October. Sony Tablet P is another tablet from Sony; it is a dual screens tablet with clamshell form factor, and the release is still expected for November 2011. Following is a review on these two uniquely designed Android tablets.

Sony Tablet S

Sony Tablet S is the latest Android Tablet by Sony running on Android 3.1 at the moment, however, Wi-Fi +3G model runs Android 3.2. The very recently announced (September 2011) tablet will be available in Europe by end September 2011 and in all markets worldwide by the end of October. It’s available in the Sony online shop for $500. The physical appearance of the device is that of a folded paper back and remains thicker and different than most other Android tablets. Though the tablet may appear bulky at a glance, it appears that the device is secure in hand and has a firm grip.

The Sony Tablet S is ergonomically designed to be placed on a desktop with a slight angular shape to the screen. The incline of the screen produces a user friendly typing space. However, using the device while seated or while standing (holding by both hands) might be somewhat of a challenge to some users. At its thickest point, the Sony Tablet S is 0.8 “thick. The incline of the screen makes the thinnest point of the device 0.3 “. Sony Tablet S is complete with a 9.4” (23.8cm) LCD capacitive touch screen with WXGA (1280 X 800pixels) resolution. Sony claims the display uses the proprietary “TruBlack” technology available in some of the television sets by Sony. The image quality of the display is reportedly of a higher quality. The display claims to be available with a protective cover, but it’s not made out of Gorilla glass. The device weighs 625 g.

The Sony Tablet S runs on a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. The device has three variations: Wi-Fi + 16GB internal storage, Wi-Fi + 32GB internal storage, Wi-Fi+3G with 16GB internal storage, and the storage in all three models can be extended using a SD card. However, in order to play media, users have to copy media files to internal storage. Playing media files from the SD card is not available with Sony Tablet S. While both Wi-Fi models run Android 3.1 at the moment, Wi-Fi+3G model runs Android 3.2. With Wi-Fi on and a movie clip playing continuously, the Sony Tablet S reportedly lasts nearly 8.5 hours with a 5000mAh battery.

Sony Tablet S comes handy with a 5 mega pixel rear facing camera and a 0.3MP front facing camera. The camera quality if the rear facing camera can be called satisfactory.

While running on Android 3.1(Honeycomb) at the moment, the device comes with many custom applications, as well. Since an IR emitter and appropriate software are available, the Sony Tablet S can be used a remote control, as well. Number of virtual keyboards are also present in the device. The device has the PlayStation certification and allows playing PlayStation and PSP games (via a simulator).

Overall, the device can be considered a good device for entertainment, web browsing and gaming other than corporate use.

Sony Tablet P

Sony Tablet P is another tablet by Sony, officially announced in September 2011, and the release is still expected for November 2011. Sony Tablet P has a unique foldable design. The device has two touch screen displays, and that will fold on top of each other. The unusual design makes the tablet stand out from the other tablets in the market.

The Sony Tablet P has a clamshell form factor and appears quite heavy. However, the tablet weighs only 372 g, and it’s quite light weight for a device with two screens. The device is 7.09” in length. The thickness of the tablet is 0.55”. The device is complete with two 5.5” (13.9 cm) LCD true black display with Ultra Wide VGA (1024×480 pixels) resolution. The two screens can be closed, and that gives the user an even smaller device suitable for easy transportation. The two screens will introduce challenges to application developers to write applications to take advantage of two screens. If the applications are not written to identify multiple screens, content may stretch over the screens. The screen is a multi touch with Accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate and Three-axis gyro sensor. The display may not be the best for generic applications or web browsing, but the design is best for reading e books. Two pages can be viewed on either screens, and page turning or flipping is limited unlike the tablet devices with tablet form factor.

The Sony Tablet P is powered by Dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2, 1 GHz processor. The processing power on Sony Tablet P is aligned with the modern smart phone specifications. The device has in built 4 GB storage available. Internal storage can be expanded up to 32 GB using an external memory card. The available slots are micro SD and SDHC. Sony Tablet P is available with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi as well as HSPA connectivity, and it is noteworthy that the data speed on this device is average.

Sony Tablet P comes with a 5 mega pixel rear facing camera and a front facing 0.3 MP VGA camera. The rear facing camera has average quality according to current smart phone standards and the front facing camera should be adequate for video calling. The rear facing camera is capable of taking quality images and has average quality considering the current smart phone market. However, since the front facing camera is only a VGA camera, the quality is only sufficient for video calling.

Sony Tablet P is running on Android 3.2 (Honeycomb). Sony Tablet P is probably the only Android Honeycomb device that utilizes two screens. The only drawback in using Sony Tablet P is that many applications are not developed to utilize two screens. Even the browsing experience may not be the most impressive tablet browsing experience since the screen divides in the middle. However, the tablet is ideal as a book reading device, gaming device as well as video viewing device when applications can be specifically designed according to the purpose. For example, games can be writing with controls on one screen and the view on the other screen. However, applications for Sony Tablet P can be downloaded from Android market.

The tablet is suitable for an average user who will use it for average web browsing, reading, gaming etc. The additional portability of the device gives an added advantage for users who are travelling frequently. With a 3080 mAh battery, users should get by a normal working day with ease.

What is the difference between Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P?
