We all know about the ubiquitous soy sauce that can be seen in all Chinese restaurants kept on the table no matter what dish is ordered. This is a salty sauce made in soy bean base that makes all Chinese recipes delicious and almost heavenly for all people who have developed their taste buds for Chinese cuisine. There is another sauce called Teriyaki sauce that is similar in looks to soy sauce that confuses many in the western world. This article attempts to highlight the differences between soy sauce and Teriyaki sauce.

Soy Sauce

Fermentation of soybeans in the presence of certain moulds and salt in water produces a paste from which liquid is taken out by pressing. This liquid is used, not just for seasoning recipes during cooking, but also to make recipes delicious while they are ready to be served. Soy sauce originated nearly 3000 years ago in ancient China, but today it is equally popular in the western world. Asian cuisines make heavy use of soy sauce for seasoning of various dishes.

Teriyaki Sauce

Teriyaki sauce is a special kind of soy sauce made in Japan but Teriyaki is also the name of a cooking method where meat is broiled or grilled dipped in soy sauce. In fact, Teriyaki sauce is one soy sauce that is sweet in taste, and it is used more for marinating meats and other vegetables before cooking. Though Teriyaki is of Japanese origin, in other Asian cultures, any sauce used to marinate meats or vegetables for cooking is called Teriyaki sauce. In any case, Teriyaki sauce is used for dipping recipes before eating them.

 

What is the difference between Teriyaki and Soy Sauce?

• Soy sauce is made by fermenting soybeans in water and salt. Wheat is also added in many cultures to soy sauce. On the other hand, Teriyaki sauce is a type of soy sauce that is sweet in taste because of use of sugar. Sometimes, even spices and wine are also used to make Teriyaki sauce.

• Soy sauce is the base in Teriyaki sauce though it tastes sugary while soy sauce tastes salty

• More labor is required to make Teriyaki sauce, and that is why it is more expensive than soy sauce

• Brown sugar, garlic, and ginger are additional ingredients in Teriyaki sauce

• Soy sauce has a watery consistency while Teriyaki sauce is thicker in consistency

• Soy sauce is almost black in appearance while Teriyaki sauce is lighter in looks because of addition of several ingredients

• Soy sauce is older than Teriyaki sauce with its origin traced back to almost 3000 years ago

• Soy sauce originated in China while Teriyaki sauce originated in Japan
