Trust vs Believe
No matter how much the users of English language seem to consider trust and believe as words with similar connotations and thus interchangeable, one should remember there is a difference between trust and believe. The difference between trust and believe lies in their usage. Before we pay any attention to this difference between trust and believe, let us first analyze the two words linguistically. Trust is a verb as well as a noun. Believe is only a verb. The noun form of believe is belief. Trustable and truster are derivatives of the word trust. Believe it or not, believe me and be unable to believe one’s luck are examples for phrases that use believe.
What does Trust mean?
Trust is stronger than believe. Trust is something that comes with you during the hard times of the other person whom you have trusted. It is a kind of permanent faith. Imagine you have borrowed some money from your friend. You believe strongly that your friend would return the money at some stage or the other.
You can never imagine your friend cheating you. You firmly feel that he would return the money. Unfortunately imagine he falls into dire straits. Even then you feel that he would return when he returns back to the normal condition. This is where you place complete trust on your friend and his capability to return the money.
In short it can be said that trust is complete faith. Trust consists of not only believing or accepting what the others say about something but following the suggestions and instructions put forward by them. Hence, trust is a step above belief. Therefore, it can be said that believe is a subset of trust.
While belief is a mere thought, trust is complete faith. In other words, trust is all about completeness. On the other hand, there are no additional qualities called thought, idea and imagination in trust. Trust is universal. Trust does not change in any circumstance. Trust is built on friendship and closeness. Quite contrary to believe, trust is very strong since it is not built on observation but closeness and proximity.

On the other hand, the word believe has the sense of momentary in it. Believe consists of accepting what the others say about something. It can be said that belief is a mere thought. Also, belief is not about completeness. It is quite often possible that a believer ends up in utter confusion being troubled with thought, idea and wild imagination. Unlike trust, believe may change due to other impulsions too both from within and without. Belief is built on observation. What you observe may deceive you at times. Hence, believe is not strong in content. Believe is characterized by the absence of the element of thorough understanding.
