Difference Between Zoology and Biology

Zoology vs Biology

Zoology and biology are two of the most fascinating fields of study that incorporate with all the living creatures of the world. Both these fields are related to each other in umpteen ways, but the differences are also contrasting. Generally, the studying about animals deals with zoology while biology is the studying about all the organisms and biologically important other facts.

Zoology

Zoology is the science of studying about animals, which is a branch of biology. In zoology, the scientific classification or taxonomy, embryology, entomology, herpetology, mammalian biology, physiology, anatomy, ecology, behavioural biology or ethology, animal distribution, evolution, and many other fields are studied. The 16th century Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner is highly respected for his book of Historiae animalium, as it triggered the modern zoology. However, the field of zoology was developed as a separate one from biology after the time of Aristotle and Galen. The work of Carl Linnaeus was instrumental in correctly classifying the animals according to the distinguished kingdoms and phyla. The blockbuster launch of the book Origin of Species by Charles Darwin in 1859 created the fields of Palaeontology ad Embryology, as it provided new dimensions to study everything related to biology and zoology. According to the basic understanding about zoology, animals are the organisms that could move in the physical environment, and that moving ability itself has offered a great fascination to the scientists through the behavioural biology. No one, without studying the animals, would ever be able to understand the natural world with sense and interest.

Biology

Biology is amongst the most fascinating field of the natural sciences as it relates with the study of animals, plants, microbes, and other biologically important things. There are five basic principles that describe the vast field of biology. According to those principles, cell is the basic functional unit of life. Cells have genes to pass characters through generations. Evolution takes place according to the demands of the environment, forming new species, and species are able to self-regulate their internal bodies to be stable in the environment. Organisms circulate the energy of the world through ecological food chains. From ancient times, when civilisation started around rivers of India, China, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, biology has been an interest of people. However, it started to develop at a higher rate after the time of Aristotle and Hippocrates. In biology, there is no difference between studying of the microscopic unicellular organism and the enormous blue whale. That is because, all those creatures are equally important when the aspects such as physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, cellular biology are concerned. In studying the biology, the non-biological things such as rocks and mountains are important to consider, as those are directly related with living beings and their activities.

What is the difference between Biology and Zoology?

• Zoology is the science of studying the animals while biology is the science of studying all the organisms. Zoology is, in fact, a field of biology.

• Biology has a longer history compared to zoology, because people were interested in understanding both plants and animals when they started civilisation around the major rivers of that time, but the animals were separately studied after the times of the great scientists Aristotle and others.

• Behavioural ecology is a zoology specific field of study while biology  does not seriously deal with ethology.
