The routes of administration of this medication include IV and subcutaneous injection. Darbepoetin alfa is sold under the trade name Aranesp by Amgen.

Typically, this drug is produced through recombinant DNA technology using modified Chinese hamster ovary cells. Darbepoetin alfa is different from endogenous erythropoietin because this substance contains two more N-linked oligosaccharide chains than endogenous erythropoietin. Moreover, darbepoetin alfa is an erythropoiesis-stimulating 165-amino acid protein.

There can be some side effects of this drug on patients. These side effects include myocardial infarction, stroke, venous thromboembolism, and thrombosis of vascular access.
