Depression vs Bipolar Disorder
Depression and bi polar disease are considered as psychiartric disorders. Depressive disorder is characteristically have the following features low mood, low self esteem, low pleasure or interest, sadness and angry. The patients usually complains lack of sleeping (insomnia). There are risk factors for developing depression. Lack of cope up skills, recurrent stressful events, affected by chronic diseases, lack of family support especially in elderly are common risk factors. The patient may express mild to severe depressive symptoms. The depresive patients are at high risk of suicides. Depends on their symptoms the anti depressive drugs may needed to treat them. The disease sometimes named as uni polar depression.
On the other hand the bi polar patients are having depression for some times and having mania (just opposite to depression) on other times. This cyclical changes may vary in time duration. Manic features are increased energy and due to that less time on sleep, hypersexuality, excess spending, grandiose delusions (thinking he has more money/ power), wearing attractive colour dresses, and pressurized speech. Lithium is used to treat bipolar patients to control the manic phase. It is important to know whether the patient in lithium because lithium has a narrow theraputic index (may cause harm if given high doses). Family history and environmental factors are contributing the disease progression.
