Difference Between Enamel and Paint

Enamel vs Paint

Painting is one job that, short of construction, has the ability to transform the interiors and exteriors of a place completely. There are many different types of paints depending upon the surface to be done and the location of the place in a structure. Two types that we commonly hear are the enamel and acrylic. There are many who feel that enamel and paint are two different things without realizing that enamel paints are one out of many different types of paints available in the market. However, there are still differences between enamel and paint even if enamel remains one of the many varieties of paints.

Enamel

Enamel paint is a special type of paint that is used to provide a protective layering to objects kept outdoors or to paint surfaces inside that are prone to be lashed with water or high temperatures like the walls in the kitchen. When enamel is applied, it air dries into a coating that provides protection to the surface and the finish is typically glossy that forms the first line of defense against water and heat. Enamel paint is mostly oil based though today there are many enamel paints available in the market that are water based or even latex based.

Enamel paint is excellent to be applied on furniture because of this protective covering as it allows the dirt over the furniture or wall to be wiped clean with a soft piece of cloth and water.

Paint

Paint is a general word used to refer to a mixture of components in a liquid base that, when applied with a brush on a wall, it air dries and leaves a solid film of color behind. The thin layer of color is at times meant for protection like in cans of cold drinks or it may be for a texture as in case of wood. However, mostly, paint is applied on walls to color them and add to the décor. The two main components of paint are the pigment, which provides color or tint to the object on which the paint is applied, and the binder, which is the resin that holds the paint together. Third important component of paint is the solvent which makes for the base of the paint.

What is the difference between Enamel and Paint?

• The difference between paint and enamel is same as that between a car and a Ford as enamel is a type of paint.

• Paint is mostly acrylic, water based or oil based. It is the oil based paints that have traditionally been referred to as enamel though today one can get water based or even latex based enamels in the market.

• Enamel paints are preferred over other paints when it comes to painting outdoor structures and walls inside that are prone to be exposed to water and high temperatures.

• Enamel paints are also used for furniture to have a glossy finish that allows for easy cleaning of furniture.
