Fellowship vs Scholarship
There are many different kinds of help and assistance provided to students to let them achieve their goals in life. The monetary help is of course the backbone of all such helps and is known by different names in different parts of the world such as grants, scholarships, fellowships, internships, and so on. These words could be very confusing to some people, as they cannot make out the difference between fellowship and scholarship. This article attempts to highlight the basic differences between fellowship and scholarship to enable students to apply for the right kind of assistance.
Scholarship
Scholarship is one financial aid that is most popular among students as it is a grant that has no strings attached and it does not require any repayment on the part of the student. It is based upon performance, and those achieving minimum stipulated grades in an exam are awarded scholarships that are started in the name of famous and literary men and women.
Scholarship is an amount of money for which Cheque is given to the recipient to pursue a particular course or degree. Often, there are competitive exams that are required to be cleared by students, to be eligible for a scholarship. Scholarships are also initiated by foundations, to help students from backward classes of the society to study when they find it difficult on their own financial means.
Fellowship
Fellowship is a grant given to students pursuing higher studies. Students qualifying a particular exam and obtaining good scores are eligible for fellowship, and there are no social or financial criteria for the selection of students.
Fellowship is given for a limited time that lasts for a few months or even a couple of years depending upon the length of the course. Fellowship is more to honor and reward meritorious candidates doing higher studies and top scoring students in any course become eligible typically for fellowship, which is in the form of a monthly stipend.
What is the difference between Fellowship and Scholarship? • Scholarships are available at even school level, but Fellowships are strictly for higher studies • Both are grants but, while scholarships are mostly in the form of a onetime cheque, fellowships are in the form of monthly stipends • Scholarships are for bright students and also for meritorious students who are financially backward. On the other hand, fellowship is more to honor the merit and high performing students in specialized courses after graduate level are granted fellowships. While no strings are attached with scholarships other than that the student pursues the course, some research work is required on the part of a doctoral student in the case of fellowships
