The Huawei P9 comes with a great and elegant design. The edges of the device are chamfered. This provides smoothness for the curved edge glass transition and the metal back plate. The sides and corners of the device are rounded to provide comfort to the hand. The smartphone comes with a dual lens snapper which is a key highlight of this smartphone. It is a nice device to touch and hold. Although the size of the display is big, it is light and not as large as some would expect. The volume rocker and the power key are on the right side of the device. The bottom of the device houses a USB Type-C port where the charging cable can be supported in either way. Older cables cannot be supported by this port. The back of the device consists of a fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scanner which comes with the device is fast and reliable and fails rarely. This is due to the integration made between the software.

The display has been designed in such a way that the smartphone does not come with a bezel. A black border, which becomes visible when the device is turned on, surrounds the device. The display comes with a resolution of 1080 X 1920 pixel display. The size of the display stands at 5.2 inches. Unfortunately, it does not support QHD as with latest flagship devices, but the user will be happy with the 424 ppi. This resolution will be able to deliver smooth and detailed imagery. The lower resolution will also mean that the GPU will go through less strain when running graphic intensive games. This will improve the battery life as well. One downside of a lower resolution display is the color inaccuracy which is even visible to the naked eye. This display will comprise of a bluish tint which dominates the whites. Sometimes the screen may feel over saturated. For a typical user, these features may not be a big deal, but the artificial look on the display may become evident to even him. The brightness of the display is 450 nits.

Processor

The smartphone is powered by a Kirin 955 SoC, which comprises of an octa-core processor. The device runs smoothly without any type of lag. 3D games are able to run at a high frame rate without any issues. The processor is able to handle any task thrown at it with ease.

The EMUI 4.1 is the software interface which interacts with the user. It overlays the Android 6.0 OS but does not feel anything close to stock Android. The app drawer has been dropped.  All the apps that have been installed on the device are visible on the home screen where they can also be organized into a folder.
