Indie and Hipster are slangs that have become a part of our daily conversation though these words are not definitive in their meanings. Hipster originated in 40’s and keeps coming back with new vigor and intensity every time people think it is gone for good. While hipster is used to refer to particular types of kids, especially teens having specific interests in music, media and magazines, Indie has many meanings, in addition to being slang for a category of kids. This article attempts to find the key differences between indie and hipster though there is a tendency to use both terms together as indie hipster to refer to certain kids. Let us take a closer look.

What is Indie?

It is a short form of independence and is a generic term that encompasses many things such as indie art, indie music, indie design, indie publisher, indie film, and so on. Whatever or whichever object or objects, clothing, music, film or many other things that remind people of belonging to a particular niche can be termed as indie. Indie kids are not pretentious as they do not try to be unique. They are indeed unique.

What is Hipster?

This is a slang first heard of in 1940’s when it was used to refer to teenagers in urban settings with a particular taste and interest in music such as indie rock. Actually, hipster culture is hard to define because of contrasting tastes, styles and behaviors being included in this umbrella phrase. In some places, hipsters are also called scenesters.

This term can be used for kids who are pretentious and are seen spending parent’s money on apparels and brands to make them look hipster are often called hipsters. Evidently, to fit into the image created especially for hipsters, kids spend a lot of time and money as this gives them a feeling of superiority over other kids.

What is the difference between Indie and Hipster?

Definitions of Indie and Hipster:

Indie: Indie is a short form for independence and captures many genres such as art, music, etc.

Hipster: Hipster is a slang term used for individuals who are ostracized from the main culture.

Characteristics of Indie and Hipster:

Kids:

Indie: Indie kids are unique.

Hipster: Hipster kids are not unique.

Scope:

Indie: Indie captures a large scope that includes many cultural aspects.

Hipster: Hipster mainly refers to individuals.
