It’s all hype in Las Vegas for those of us who are tech savvy and are craving the release of new and cutting-edge products. Even before the CES2012 has started, manufacturers have started releasing their products as sneak peeks to get the attention from the media. This is of course a sound penetration strategy for first impression does last long, and when the first impression is a sneak peek and the peek is tasty enough, the craving for the actual peek only grows. Lenovo has been quick in trying to grow this certain taste by pre releasing a couple of their products including IdeaPad S2 and Lenovo S2 smartphone, as well as, their Android run smart TV. Lenovo S2

The Lenovo S2 lies somewhere in the in between of a high end smartphone at an economical investment range. It comes with 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon single core processor with either 512MB or 1GB of RAM depending on the set up you choose. That is to say, Lenovo S2 will come either in 512MB RAM with 8GB of internal storage, or 1GB RAM with 16GB of internal storage. We are hoping that it would have the ability to expand the memory using a microSD card for 16GB storage just won’t suffice nowadays. It has 3.8 inch screen with 800 x 480 pixels resolution, which is acceptable. We would have been rather happy to hear S2 doing a better resolution than this though. The apparent setback in Lenovo S2 is that it doesn’t run on latest Android OS v 4.0 IceCreamSandwich. Lenovo has decided to port its product with Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread, and they haven’t announced about an upgrade to ICS either. We are guessing that there will be an upgrade to ICS because the specs of this handset can handle ICS very well.

Lenovo S2 comes with 8MP camera at the rear with some advanced features and VGA camera for the use of video conferencing. We suspect geo tagging will be enabled with the use of Assisted GPS and Lenovo S2 would come with usual aspects on an Android smartphone. The network connectivity is still unknown, although, we can be certain for it to have HSDPA connectivity. Our guess is that Lenovo won’t try to introduce a 4G handset in Lenovo S2 debut run. It also has the ability to sync the media content automatically with cloud infrastructure and among cross devices, which is great. The improved UI with a clean layout included in Lenovo S2 seems to be an attraction, as well. As per Lenovo, this handset boasts of unique kernel level security that protects your data and prevents phishing and SMS trafficking. It is indeed a welcome addition and one that would grab the attention of seekers out here in Las Vegas at CES.

Apple iPhone 4S

Apple iPhone 4S has the same look and feel of iPhone 4 and comes in both black and white. The stainless steel built gives it an elegant and expensive style, which appeals to the users. It also is almost the same size as iPhone 4 but slightly heavier weighing 140g. It features the generic Retina display, which Apple is extremely proud of. It comes with a 3.5 inches LED-backlit IPS TFT Capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors, and scores the highest resolution as per Apple, which is 640 x 960 pixels. The pixel density of 330ppi is extremely high that Apple claims that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. This obviously results in crisp text and stunning images.

iPhone 4S comes with 1GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU in Apple A5 chipset and 512MB RAM. Apple claims this delivers two times more power and seven times better graphics. It is also highly energy efficient, which enables Apple to boast an outstanding battery life. iPhone 4S comes in 3 storage options; 16/32/64GB without the option of expanding the storage with a microSD card. It utilizes the infrastructure provided by carriers, to stay in touch at all times with HSDPA at 14.4Mbps and HSUPA at 5.8Mbps. In terms of camera, iPhone has an improved camera of 8MP that can record 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. It has a LED flash and touch to focus function along with Geo-tagging with A-GPS. The front VGA camera enables the iPhone 4S to make use of its application Facetime, which is a video calling application.

While iPhone 4S is graced with generic iOS applications, it comes with Siri, the most advanced digital personal assistant up to date. Now the iPhone 4S user can use voice to operate the phone, and Siri understands natural language. It also understands what the user meant; that is, Siri is a context aware application. It has its own personality, tightly coupled with the iCloud infrastructure. It can do basic tasks like setting up an alarm or reminder for you, sending a text or email, schedule meetings, follow your stock, make a phone call etc. It can also perform complex tasks like finding information for a natural language query, getting directions, and answering your random questions.

Apple is best known for its unbeatable battery life; thus, it would be normal to expect it to have a fabulous battery life. With the Li-Pro 1432mAh battery it has, iPhone 4S promises a talk time of 14h 2G and 8h 3G. Recently the users have been making complaints about the battery life and Apple has announced that it’s working on a fix for that, while their update for iOS5 has partially solved the problem. We can stay tuned for updates and expect the Technological Innovator to come up with a fix for the problem at hand soon.

Conclusion

The first impressions of Lenovo S2 were indeed good, and we certainly like the first smartphone from Lenovo. That leaves us to wrap up on it with our comparison on Apple iPhone 4S. In some contexts, this is not going to be fair, for there are still things that we need to know about Lenovo S2 to be impartially judged. However, we can deduce that the 1.4GHz overclocked single core processor would yield nearly the same performance benchmarks of Apple iPhone 4S and the memory would obviously perform better. The new UI included in Lenovo S2 seems clean and minimalistic, which would be an eye catcher simply because it’s pureness. The extra curved edges in S2 gives it a sense of differentiation from other Androids out there and makes it a perfect competition for Apple iPhone 4S.
