It is the practice of a lot of mobile phone manufacturers to release resembling version of a smartphone derived from a base model, and name them with so many names to confuse the customer. However, at the end of the day, what the customer’s perception is that this vendor manufacturers a lot of smartphones; thus, it should logically follow that it is a profitable, and hence a good vendor. One wouldn’t even see brain deriving that conclusion because it’s unconsciously processed, yet market researchers indicate about subtle things like that in order to get the competitive advantage in a highly competitive industry. The Motorola Razr line has been somewhat confusing in the recent past, since they have released many resembling handsets with Razr tag and identified them as variants of Razr using various names. In essence, they are versions of Razr model with minor improvements in network connectivity, and battery life etc. We have picked up Motorola Razr to be compared against a new handset from a new vendor.

Panasonic has announced a line of smartphones called Eluga recently, and the Eluga Power was unveiled at the MWC 2012. The Eluga line is rather vibrant, as Panasonic Eluga is certified for water resistance. They have some attractive taglines to keep the customers bound to their product, and we have to say we are impressed of the progress Panasonic has made since they are not a mainstream smartphone manufacturer although Eluga is not their first one. In any case, let us compare Panasonic Eluga Power against Motorola Razr because we reckon Eluga Power is indeed a variant of the base model Eluga just like Motorola Razr is a variant of Droid Razr.

Panasonic Eluga Power

Panasonic Eluga Power is actually a better version of Eluga where several shortcomings of Eluga have been addressed. If you are familiar with the base model, then you would know that it doesn’t really have a great score on battery life. The Power version has a better battery. It also comes with a bigger screen and, because of these changes, it has become somewhat thicker and heavier. The dimensions score at 136 x 70 x 9.6mm and 133g of weight. However, Panasonic has been cautious to keep the IP57 certification for water resistant, which we will explain later.

Panasonic Eluga Power has 5 inches LCD Capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at a pixel density of 294ppi. It is powered by 1.5GHz dual core Krait processor on top of Qualcomm MSM8270 Snapdragon chipset and 1GB of RAM with Adreno 225 GPU. As you can see, they have included the new Krait processor and MSM8270 variant of chipset which will give great results. The operating system is Android OS v4.0 ICS. The setup is optimized to deliver a smooth user experience without any hiccoughs. It has 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash that can capture 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. The camera also has geo tagging, and a secondary camera is available for video conferencing. We would have expected the Power version to come with LTE connectivity, but Panasonic has thought the better of it and limited Eluga Power to HSDPA, which can score speeds up to 14.4Mbps. The Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n ensures continuous connectivity, and you can also share your internet connection by setting up a wi-fi hotspot. The DLNA capability means, you can wirelessly stream rich media content directly to your Smart TV. Panasonic Eluga didn’t have a microSD card slot, but fortunately, Eluga Power comes with 8GB of internal storage with the option to expand it up to 32GB. As mentioned above, it also has a larger battery at 1800mAh and we would expect the smartphone to have a battery life of 6-7 hours at the least.

Motorola Razr

Do you think you have seen thin phones? I beg to differ, for we are going to talk about one of the thinnest smartphones. Motorola Razr features a thickness of 7.1mm, which is unbeatable. It measures to 130.7 x 68.9 mm and has a 4.3inches Super AMOLED Capacitive Touchscreen featuring a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. It has comparatively high pixel density and it sure scores good compared to other smartphones in the market. Motorola Razr boasts a heavy build; ‘Built to take a Beating’ is how they put it. Razr is shielded with KEVLAR strong back plate, to suppress onslaught scratches and scrapes. The screen is made up of Corning Gorilla glass that defends the screen and a water-repellent force field of nanoparticles are used to shield the phone against water attacks. Feeling impressed? Well I sure am, for this is military standard safety for a smartphone.

It doesn’t matter how much it’s reinforced outside, if it’s not reconciled inside. But Motorola has delicately undertaken that responsibility and come up with a set of high-end hardware to match the outside. It has a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU on top of TI OMAP 4430 chipset. The 1GB RAM boosts its performance and enables the smoothness of operation. Android Gingerbread v2.3.5 takes the full throttle of the hardware offered by the smartphone and binds the user to an awesome user experience. Razr has an 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash, touch focus, face detection and image stabilization. Geo-tagging is also enabled with assisted GPS functionality available in the phone. The camera can record 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second, which is great. It also accommodates smooth video calling with the 1.3MP camera and Bluetooth v4.0 with LE+EDR.

Motorola Razr enjoys the fast network speeds of HSPA+ up to 14.4Mbps. It also facilitates the Wi-Fi connectivity with the built in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n module, and it has the ability to act as a hotspot. Razor has an active noise cancellation with dedicated mic and a digital compass. It also has a HDMI port, which is a very valuable edition as a multimedia device. It does not boast of completely redesigned sound system, but Razr does not fail to exceed expectations in that too. Motorola has promised an amazing talk time of 10 hours with a 1780mAh battery for Razr, and that certainly exceeds expectations in any case for a large phone like this.

Conclusion

Sometimes we get clouded by prejudices we have about brands when we are to conclude something. The specialty in the conclusions we provide is more or less objective since we are trying to keep them less subjective as possible. Thus, you get the chance to supplement the conclusion with your prejudices. In this case, what we have to say is that Panasonic Eluga Power is better in terms of performance. It has a better processor and a higher clock rate. Eluga Power also has a larger screen and a better resolution at a higher pixel density. Some people might consider a bigger screen as a bad omen, and if you’re one of them, there won’t be much ambiguity involved in making the purchasing decision for you. For the rest of us, there are some other things we can explore. Another pro for Eluga Power is that it has the certification of water resistance.

Motorola Razr, on the other hand, comes with a military standard Kevlar reinforced back-plate and scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla glass display. It is also protected with a water repellent coating; and the electrical boards inside also coated with this splash guard. However, it’s a repellent, not a resistant. Razr is thinner and lighter than Eluga Power. The ace for Motorola Razr is the battery life, continuous talktime of 10 hours is amazing. Thus, if you’re a corporate ambassador requiring a lot of juice on your battery, Motorola Razr is definitely your guy. Otherwise, let your prejudice work alongside with the conclusion and make your purchasing decision.
