Difference Between Pitbull and Amstaff

Both Pitbull and Amstaff are very closely related dogs as their ancestors are almost the same and come from England. Being descended from almost the same stock in England and originated in the United States, both Pitbull and Amstaff are sometimes referred as the same breed. However, there are important differences to be considered between the two and those are discussed in this article.

Pitbull

Pit bull terriers, also known as American Pit bull terriers, originated in the United States, but their ancestors came from England and Ireland. They include to the members of the Molosser breed group and they are a result of the cross between terriers and bulldogs. Their coat is short, and the colouration could vary depending on the parents’ colourations. Their musculature is smooth and well developed but never looks bulky. Their eyes are round to almond shaped and ears are small. They are medium sized dogs, the weight of an adult Pit bull terrier could vary from 15 to 40 kilograms, and the height ranges from 35 to 60 centimetres.

Pitbulls are generally friendly with their owner family as well as with strangers. They have been trained for hunting purposes as they are very good chasers. However, they may be susceptible for skin allergies, congenital heart defects, and hip dysplsia. The lifespan of a healthy pit bull terrier is about 14 years.

Amstaff

Amstaff is a name used to refer the American Staffordshire terrier, which includes medium sized dogs with a short coat of fur. They originated in the United States, but their ancestors are from England. Bulldogs have been crossed with few other breeds such as White English Terriers, Fox Terriers, and Black and Tan Terriers to develop the Staffordshire terriers. The average height of an adult Amstaff is about 43 to 48 centimetres and the average weight ranges from 18 to 23 kilograms. They are very strong dogs for their size. American Staffordshire terriers have a medium sized muzzle, and it is round at the upper side. Their eyes are dark and round, and the lips are tightly closed, but there is no looseness. This dog breed has a thick, glossy, and short coat of fur.

Amstaffs are intelligent, and people keep them as both pets and guard dogs. Tail docking is common, but ear cropping is not very common for the Amstaff. They have a long lifetime that varies from 12 to 16 years.
