Poodle vs Toy Poodle

Very often, dogs are available in different sizes within the same breed, and the poodles and toy poodles are such varieties. Depending on the requirements, these dogs are available in different sizes. Both poodles and toy poodles exhibit the same traits but in different sizes. Therefore, it is always good to know about the particular facts about their characteristics. This article presents the most important characteristics of both poodles and toy poodles prior to getting into the differences between them.

Poodle

Poodle is an adorable dog breed that has been originated in France. They are quite recognizable from their distinctive appearance, especially due to the presence of curly coat of fur all over the body. Poodles are amongst the most intelligent dogs, and only the Border collies are more intelligent than these dogs. Therefore, poodles can be trained well to adapt for any type of dog sport. In fact, they are highly skilful in most of the dog sports. Poodles have been bred in three main categories where there are three accepted sizes by most of the major kennel clubs in the world. The three available sizes of poodles are known as standard, miniature, and toy. Additionally, there are many available coat colours, as well. Their thick coat of fur is highly curled and resist against water. Therefore, the body does not get wet even after being dipped in water for some time. Their affection with water is a result of their water-resistant coat, and sometimes poodles are referred as a type of water dogs. However, their fur coat is a single-layered one without an inner coat. Poodle owners very often groom these dogs through clipping the coat, so that they look pretty and different. The type of clipping differs according to the occasion that they have to attend. They have a proportioned body, which is squarely built and attractive. Poodles are lovable and affectionate pets and skilful dogs with about 12 years of lifespan.

Toy Poodle

Toy poodle is the smallest available size of the poodles with 25.4 centimetres (10 inches) of height. Their weight should not exceed 4 kilograms (9 pounds). They have all the characteristics of a standard poodle but not the height and weight. The standard poodles are the ancestors of toy poodles, as they have been selectively bred to produce this small variety. Toy poodles have an excellent track record for their great obedience and agility. Their capabilities in watchdog roles as well as in performing tricks are noticeable. However, toy poodles are amongst the most affectionate dogs due to their great intelligence and adorable appearance. They are long-lived dogs with about 12 – 15 years of an average lifespan. Being very active and agile dogs, toy poodles need to walk at least once or twice a day.
