A couple of years back when Android was introduced as an operating system, the smartphone industry was closed. The only available smartphones were high-end at that time, and there wasn’t any entrée level smartphones. The market leaders used to be Apple, HTC and few other competitors and the operating systems used to be iOS and Windows Mobile. If you have used a windows mobile smartphone those days, you may agree with me that the user experience was horrible. That was one of the main reasons Apple could kick start the smartphone market. But the introduction of the Android changed the scenario. It was also introduced as a high end operating system limited to cutting edge smartphones, but Android made sure they provide an admirable user interaction. From that day to today, it has evolved making it possible for us to get our hands on smartphones that don’t need cutting edge technology to make them run. I guess what I’m trying to say is that, with the introduction of Android, smartphones became more and more reachable to the end users. The perception people had towards smartphones changed dramatically with the reduction of the cost. This also made the other competitors like Apple iOS and Windows Mobile to make their prices lower, as the market dominance was no longer theirs.

Today we are going to talk about two smartphone that fall to the category of entrée level smartphones. They are sleek and stylish, do not require a lot of high-end hardware and comes in economical packages. These two smartphones are from Samsung and both fall in to the Galaxy family. We have been wondering whether it’s advantageous to include low-end smartphones to the prestigious Galaxy family, but it seems Samsung thinks they are worth it. So let’s talk Galaxy Mini and Galaxy Mini 2 today.

Samsung Galaxy Mini

Samsung Galaxy Mini is your average entrée phone. It has 3.14 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen with 256k colors featuring a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels at a pixel density of 127ppi. It’s rather small at 110.4 x 60.8mm but slightly thicker than the usual measure at 12.1mm. Samsung has granted this kid a 600MHz ARM v6 processor on top of Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset and Adreno 200 GPU with 384MB of RAM. It runs on Android OS v2.2 Froyo, and an upgrade is available for v2.3 Gingerbread. The low end processor would handle just about anything in a general use case and thus would serve you well.

It has 3.15MP camera with geo tagging and the video capturing is rated at QVGA quality @ 15 frames per second. Unfortunately, a secondary camera is not available with this model. The internal storage is rated at 160MB with the ability to expand using a microSD card up to 32GB. The connectivity is defined by HSDPA which provide speed up to 7.2Mbps and continuous connectivity is ensured by Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. It can also act as a wi-fi hotspot, to share your internet connection with your friends. Samsung claims the little kid can work up to 9 hours and 30 minutes in a single charge.

Samsung Galaxy Mini 2

As the name suggests, this is the elder sister of Galaxy Mini. It is more or less of the same size at 109.4 x 58.6mm and 11.6mm thick with the same weight of 105g. It has 3.27 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels at a pixel density of 176ppi. The processor is clocked at 800MHz on top of the same Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset and Adreno 200 GPU with 512MB of RAM. Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread has assumed the controls of this hardware and does quite a good job in providing a smooth user experience.

Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 has 3.15MP camera with geo tagging and it can capture VGA quality videos @ 25 frames per second. Like her little sister, Mini 2 doesn’t come with a secondary camera. The network connectivity is accessed through HSDPA, and it also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity. It is an added advantage that Mini 2 can act as a wi-fi hotspot, to share your internet connection. The built in DLNA capability enables you to stream rich media content wirelessly to your Smart TV. It comes with 4GB of internal storage, with the option to expand using microSD card up to 32GB. Mini 2 has 1300mAh battery, and we are assuming it to have a life of approximately 9-10 hours.

Conclusion

You won’t need much motivation or explanation in order to go for Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 because compared to the original, it’s newer and better. The processor has been improved, the screen size and resolution has been slightly improved, and the camera quality is also somewhat improved. They ship Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 with a larger battery too although we don’t have battery life usage charts. In any case, the sound decision would be to go for Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 since the price level won’t be much different either.
