Sherbet vs Sorbet

Sherbet and Sorbet are often confused by a number of people to be the same since they are both frozen desserts. It is often assumed that Sorbet is the English word for the Arabic word Sherbet. However, the fact is that there is a big difference between these two desserts, sherbet and sorbet.

What is Sherbet?

Sherbet is derived from the Arab word sharbat which means drink and has been considered as a beverage of the elite families in the Middle East. It is a dairy-based frozen dessert that sometimes contains eggs which make it creamy in consistency just like that of an ice cream. In some countries, garnishes like cherries and rose petals are included in a serving of Sherbet.

What is Sorbet?

Sorbet is a frozen dessert that is made with flavoured, sweetened water and is considered to be the same as sherbets. The base of a Sorbet are fruit juices or fruit purees, and it does not contain eggs thus making it more suitable for the health-conscious. Sometimes, various alcohols are used in sorbets which make the texture of the dessert softer. One can have sorbet as a non-fat/low-fat alternative to ice cream.

What is the difference between Sherbet and Sorbet?

Sherbet and Sorbet does not differ very much from each other. However, like all things, sherbet and sorbet continue to evolve and adapt themselves as they are presented in one country or another. Although featuring a number of differences, sherbet and sorbet are two frozen desserts that are typically presented after a meal.

Although Sorbet can be considered as much healthier than Sherbet, it still lacks the creaminess that a Sherbet has. Since Sorbet does not have fat (since it does not contain any dairy products), it is icier compared to Sherbet. While Sherbet is popular in the Middle East, Sorbet on the other hand is widely served in Europe especially as a refresher during the summer season. Most popular Sorbet flavours are coffee and chocolate whereas most popular Sherbet flavors are pomegranate, rose and lemon.
