Difference Between Sony Xperia Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium

Key Difference – Sony Xperia Z5 Compact vs Z5 Premium

The key difference between Sony Xperia Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium is, Xperia Z5 Premium comes with the world’s first ever 4K display with 801 ppi pixel density. This will provide great detail, but the battery will suffer due to the high power consumption of the high-quality screen. Although there are many similarities in the hardware specs of both phones, there are some differences which need to be considered. The Xperia Z5 Compact is a small phone but almost comes with the same hardware configuration as the Xperia Z5 Premium. Let us analyse both phones and find the key differences that differentiate them.

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Review – Features and Specifications

The Sony Xperia Z5 compact is a phone that it small yet powerful. Small phones are not being made much nowadays due to the invasion of large screen phones. Although it is a small phone, it is a bit expensive as it comes with all the essential performance features which come with the Sony Xperia Z5 itself. There many other cheap phones in the market which have a cheaper competitive rate which the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact needs to deal with.

Design

Although the Xperia Z5 is a small phone, it can not be considered small when we consider all aspects. The problem lies in the thickness of the phone which is about 8.6 mm thick making it fell like a brick in the hand sometimes. The shape of the phone is rectangular which is similar to the dimensions that come with the Xperia Z3 Compact. This year, many phones that have a thin frame have been released. Sometimes users may prefer these phones over the Sony Xperia Z5 compact due to this difference in thickness.

But there are some features in this phone that have greater significance over other competitors. The Hardware is top notch. The back is covered by frosted glass which is noteworthy. This phone comes in a variety of colors; it looks good and feels great in the hand.

The colors that come with this phone are black, pink, yellow and white.

Features

The power button also functions as a fingerprint scanner. It has been placed on the side of the phone which is easy and reliable to use. If the finger is wet, it will not function properly as all the other fingerprint scanner enabled phones in the market. As it is a unique feature, this model also has waterproofing. The USB and headphones have also been designed in such a way that they do not need flaps and are waterproof without them. The SIM and micro SD cards have a flap which does not need opening regularly. This device comes with a built-in storage of 32 GB with the addition of a microSD slot which is fast disappearing from many leading flagship phones that have been recently developed.

Typing can be a bit difficult compared with large screen phones.

Performance

The key reason for Sony to develop this phone is to make a small display phone with high-end hardware performance. The reason behind the thickness of the phone may be the high-end hardware that has been crammed into the phone. The phone does not get as hot as many of the other handsets that are in the present market. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor which is also used in its larger brother, the Xperia Z5 that has a clock a speed of 2GHz. The memory which comes with the device is 2GB. Although the phone is small,  it packs a punch from a performance point of view. The problem here is the processor is powerful, but the next generation Snapdragon processors will be more efficient. This will cause this device to lag behind in its own family of Xperia. Even now, Apple and Samsung Exynos are producing more powerful processors to add to the competition. All this being said, still the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact has a fast processor, which enables the software to be fast and efficient without any lag.

Display

The size of the display is just 4.6 inches. The display uses IPS technology which has a resolution of 720p. The pixel density that comes with the phone is 323 ppi which is similar to the pixel density found on a retina display. The colors produced by the screen are vibrant, and the IPS display is known to produce good viewing angles.

Camera

The camera is not as fast as the iPhone 6S and the Samsung Galaxy S6 comparatively. The rear camera is able to support a resolution of 23 MP. Sony boasts of the camera that consists of a hybrid phase detection autofocus system. Although the focusing is fast, as a whole the camera performs slowly especially when shooting HDR shots. The slowness is caused by the shutter lag and the post shoot delay. But the camera of the Sony Xperia Z5 compact is up there with the best cameras in the smartphone industry, which are able to capture crisp and great imagery.

Battery Life

Since the phone is thick, it comes with a bigger battery which can last for a longer period. Even when the phone is used consistently like watching a high definition movie and continuous streaming, the phone will be able to last for more than a day. The battery capacity of the battery is 2700mAh. Even Xperia Z5 having a 2900mAh battery capacity would struggle to last for such a longer time; hence, this is a key feature.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium Review – Features and Specifications

Design

This edition of smartphones comes with mirrored backs. The phone also comes with metal rims as with the normal Z5. The logo is engraved on the back of the phone, and the corners have been protected by nylon which will save the phone from damage if dropped.  The phone comes in chrome or silver versions. There is also a Gold version which appears different compared with the other models of the same smartphone. It looks frosty and has a premium look to it.

Display

The Sony Xperia Z5 premium has a display size of 5.5 inches. Although the phone is big, it feels comfortable in the hand. It does not feel like a phablet which is another advantage of the device. It is still a bit hard to operate the phone by using just one hand, but it much better when compared with the iPhone 6S. Due to the larger size of the display, every feature is made compact and fits in well. In summary, the phone is large but compact at the same time.

4K

The most noteworthy feature is the pixel density of the phone, which is 806dpi, which produces sharpness which is not found in another phone yet. Sometimes even the QHD displays seem to be of no additional value as that amount of detail is not needed for such a small device. Sony, even with a better and sharper display, has to prove why it is essential for such a high-resolution screen to be present on the phone. Even of the sharpness is present, our eyes may not be able to spot it. It is great that technology is able to provide such a feature, but the usefulness of such a high resolution may not be necessary.

QHD and full HD displays are great displays themselves and offer high quality imagery. All the phones produced these days come with great display technology built into them. So the Sony Xperia Z5 may not have the edge on the display point of view compared with other phones in the market. There are no 4K contents available yet for a smartphone, but 4K is supported by the device which is a noteworthy feature.

Camera

The camera has a resolution of 23MP, which is a key selling point of the phone. Autofocus speeds come at 0.03s which can produce an image with quality, detail and sharpness.  Sony believes this camera can perform well in any lighting condition and also is confident its camera will be a market leader.

Battery

The battery capacity stands at 3430mAh which is a sufficient value. But the need for more power for the  4K display may drain the battery sooner rather than later. But Sony claims that the battery will last for two days as with the Sony Xperia Z5, hopefully with the help of a power saving feature. This may enable the phone to last for the two days as claimed by Sony.

Fingerprint scanner

The other key feature that accompanies the phone is the fingerprint scanner which has been systematically placed on the side of the phone, which makes unlocking the phone easy with just a mere tap. The scanner will operate without any lag, making it easy for the phone to be unlocked conveniently by just pressing the button. Features like Android Pay, contactless payments and biometric authentication are going to play a major role in the future. Adding such a feature to its smartphone can be considered a smart move where many of its rivals already have such features built in.

Features

In addition to the above features, it is also able to support PS4 remote play, Hi-Res sound and is able to be water and dust proof at the same time.
