Toshiba has released an ultra slim (7.7mm) 10.1″ tablet named AT200 at the IFA 2011 on 1st September 2011. It is an Android Honeycomb tablet. iPad 2 was released to the market in March 2011. It is a 9.7″ tablet based on iOS 4.3. iPad 2 is the latest version of the last year’s largely successful iPad by Apple Inc. Following is a review on the similarities and differences of the two devices.

Toshiba AT200

Toshiba AT200 is an Android Tablet announced in September 2011 by Toshiba. The device is not yet released to the market, it’s expected by the 4th quarter of 2011.

Toshiba AT200 stands 10.08” tall and has a thickness of 0.3”. The thickness in Toshiba AT200 makes it the thinnest Android tablet available. This Toshiba tablet weighs 558 g. The display is a 10.1” (257mm) HD capacitive,  multi touch, LED backlit, LCD display with WXGA (1280×800 pixels) resolution, and 16:10 aspect ratio. In terms of sensors the device has a 3D accelerometer for auto rotate, a Gyroscope, e-Compass and an ambient light sensor.

Toshiba AT200 has a 1.2GHz MHz TI OMAP 4430 processor with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. The device also has 1 GB DDR2 RAM. Toshiba AT200 can achieve up to 64 GB storage by using an external memory card. Toshiba AT200 reportedly has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. While Micro-USB is supported a type D micro HDMI port and a docking port are also available.

Toshiba AT200 has a 5 mega pixel rear facing camera with LED Flash. The front facing camera is also 2 mega pixels and can be utilized for video conferencing. With the given specifications, the rear facing camera should give good quality photos but might not be able to replace the users point and shoot camera. The front facing camera quality will suffice for video conferencing.

Toshiba AT200 may not be designed for entertainment, but audio and video players are available with the device. The music player on board allows filtering music by Album, Artist and Playlists. While music is playing, the album art cover will be displayed in the background. The device is complete with stereo speakers and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

It is perhaps early to comment on the battery life of Toshiba AT200. However, Toshiba claims an average 8 hour battery life with watching video and Wi-Fi switched on.

Toshiba AT200 comes with Android 3.2 pre installed and the standard Android UI is available without much customization. Applications for Toshiba AT200 can be downloaded from Android market place.

Apple iPad 2

iPad 2 is the latest version of the last year’s largely successful iPad by Apple Inc. iPad 2 was officially released in March 2011. A significant change in software is not visible; however hardware modifications can be seen. iPad 2 has definitely become thinner and lighter than its predecessor and has benchmarked the industry standards for tablet PC’s.

iPad 2 is designed ergonomically and users may find it a little smaller than the previous version (iPad). The device remains 0.34″ at its thickest point. At nearly 600g the device cannot be called a light weight device. iPad 2 is available in Black and White versions. iPad 2 is complete with a 9.7” LED backlit multi touch display with IPS technology. The screen has a finger print resistant oleo phobic coating. In terms of connectivity, the iPad 2 is available as Wi-Fi only, as well as, a 3G version.

The new iPad 2 has a 1 GHz dual core CPU called the A5. The graphics performance is reportedly 9 times faster. The device is available in 3 storage options such as 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. The device supports 9 hours of battery life for 3G web surfing and charging is available via power adapter and USB. The device also includes a three-axis gyroscope, an accelerometer, and a light sensor.

iPad 2 comprises a front facing camera, as well as, a rear facing camera, but in comparison to other cameras in the market, the rear facing camera is of less quality, though it can record up to 720p HD video. In still camera mode, it has 5x digital Zoom. The front camera can be mainly used for video calling called “FaceTime” in iPad terminology. Both cameras have the capability to capture video as well.

Since the screen is multi touch, inputs can be given by many hand gestures. Additionally a microphone is also available with the iPad 2. As for output devices a 3.5-mm stereo headphone mini jack and a built-in speaker is available.

The new iPad 2 comes with iOS 4.3 installed. iPad 2 has the backing of the world’s biggest collecting of mobile applications for a platform. Applications for iPad 2 can be downloaded from Apple App store directly to the device. The device comes complete with multi lingual support as well. “FaceTime”; the video conferencing application is probably the highlight of the phones capabilities. With the new updates to iOS 4.3 the browser performance is also reportedly upgraded.

As for accessories iPad introduces the new smart cover for iPad 2. The cover is designed seamlessly with iPad 2 that lifting up the cover is capable of waking up iPad. If the cover is closed iPad 2 will immediately go to sleep. A wireless keyboard is also available and it’s sold separately. Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound is also available via an Apple Digital Av adapter sold separately.

The cost of ownership for an iPad is perhaps the highest in the market to own a tablet PC. A Wi-Fi only version can start at 499 $ and go up to 699 $. While a Wi-Fi and 3 G version can start from $629 to $829.

The display of Toshiba AT200 is a 10.1” capacitive LED backlit, LCD touch screen with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution. iPad 2 is complete with a 9.7” LED backlit, LCD touch screen with 1024 x 768 pixels resolution. Among the two devices, Toshiba AT200 is the device with the bigger screen. iPad 2 has a finger print resistant oleophobic coating while the availability of similar in Toshiba AT200 cannot be confirmed as yet. In terms of sensors, Toshiba AT200 has a 3D accelerometer for auto rotate, a Gyroscope, Compass and a light sensor while iPad 2 has a three-axis gyroscope, an accelerometer and a light sensor. iPad 2 is complete with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. While Wi-Fi is available on Toshiba AT200, 3G connectivity is not available. Considering the current tablet market this could be a huge de motivator for potential buyers. There for in terms of video conferencing also, Toshiba AT200 will deliver better quality in terms of video. Toshiba claims that Toshiba AT200 has 8 hours of battery life with Wi-Fi on and video playing. iPad 2 generally has 9 hours of battery life with Wi-Fi on. iPad 2 comes with iOS 4.3 installed and applications for iPad 2 can be downloaded from Apple App. Toshiba AT200 is an Android tablet and comes with Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) installed.
