Tsunami and Flood are hydrological disasters which can lead to environmental, human and financial losses. The loss greatly depends on the affected populations prevention methods and vulnerability. Great damage happens when one is not informed or was completely unaware of such condition.

Tsunami

Tsunami is a Japanes word, 津波, which is composed of 2 kanji, tsu or 津 (harbor) and nami or 波 (wave). It is also termed as a tsunami wave train. These are series of water waves that are caused by the dislocation of big volumes of water, commonly an ocean. However, it can also happen in large lakes. They frequently happen in Japan; So far, there are about 195 recorded tsunami events.

Flood

Flood is a term that came from the Old English word, flod, which is common among Germanic languages ( Dutch is vloed, German is flut and Latin is flumen, fluctus, all words have the same root that means float or flow.) Flood myth is stories about a great flood sent by a deity (Supreme Being) in destroying civilization. This is considered as an act of sacred retribution.

Difference Between Tsunami and Flood

A tsunami potentially generates when there are volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, man-made or natural underwater explosions and other meteorite ocean impacts or mass movements. As for floods, they are caused by having large volumes of water like lakes, ocean or rivers, heavy rain falls, and serious snow melting. Tsunami usually happens in Pacific areas because of its huge tectonically active regions. While floods commonly occur on areas that have flat and broad lands that are near any waterways or bodies of water. Tsunamis are series of waves while floods are water overflows.

Nobody is better than the other. The occurrence of these disasters means death and loss. You should always be ready for these kinds of conditions to ensure the safety of your family and friends.
