Ahmedabad and Pune may appear to a casual observer as quite similar cities as both are large metros in the eastern and western parts of India respectively, but there is a lot of difference between Ahmedabad and Pune. Both are bustling with activity and very advanced but have differences in terms of populace, culture, language and so on. Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is a large city in the state of Gujarat in the eastern part of India. Ranking 7th in terms of size in India, it has a population of around 4 million and is located on the banks of Sabarmati River. It was the capital of Gujarat till 1970 when it was shifted to Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad has a long history. It was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411. The city is located between 23.03 degree North and 72.58 degrees East at 53 meters above sea level.

Today Ahmedabad is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Though not the capital of Gujarat, Ahmedabad is certainly the cultural and commercial lifeline of Gujarat.

Pune

It is the 2nd largest city in the state of Maharashtra after Mumbai and 8th largest city in India. During Mughal period, Pune was the seat of power. It has a long history, having been founded by Rashtrakootas. It was later ruled by Yadavas. Mughals ruled the city for a long time, after which it came under Maratha rule. Shivaji, the Maratha ruler made the city famous, but after his death, control of the city again passed in to the hands of Mughals. The city is located between 18.32 North and 73.51 East at a height of 559 meters above sea level. Despite being smaller in size than Ahmedabad, Pune has a bigger population which stands at 4.4 million.

Pune is a prosperous city known for educational opportunities and its nice climate. It is located at the confluence of two rivers Mula and Mutha.

Commerce and education

As far as commercial importance is concerned, Ahmedabad has long been an important center of trade and commerce owing to its fertile land. Cotton production is the highest in India here and there are many cotton mills supplying it to the rest of India. The city is also known for textiles and cotton fabrics made here are even exported to many countries.

Pune on the other hand has benefited being in close proximity to Mumbai, the commercial capital of India. It has also emerged as an important IT hub in modern India after Bangalore and Hyderabad. Pune has the 2nd highest per capita income in India making it a very prosperous city.

Pune has carved a niche in the field of education with some high quality engineering and medicine, management, as well as law colleges. Students from various parts of the country come here in search of higher learning.
