Allele vs Locus
Allele and locus can be normally heard when discussing chromosomes and genes. Genetics is usually perceived by many as a complicated subject and there are a lot of people who find allele and locus as confusing terms. Thus, differentiating these two can be helpful.
Deoxyribonucleic acid popularly known as DNA can be sequenced in more than a single way and an allele is one of them. Alleles in each gene differ from each other. Difference in the DNA sequences or alleles result to different characteristics or traits, like maybe color. Although, there are times that different alleles produce the same result. There are a few genetic disorders caused by allelic issues.
In genetics, locus is actually the location of a certain gene or the sequence of DNA on a particular chromosome. Most people refer to it as a chromosome’s marker. Loci is the plural term of the word. A genetic map is loci’s ordered list for a certain genome. Gene mapping is the most commonly used process to determine the locus in a certain biological trait.
Genetics is not as complicated as it seems actually. Allele and locus differ because of the following. Locus is defined as a certain location on a chromosome, and is usually referred to, as a marker. Locus can be a gene, but it is a need for it to be located in in a location in the chromosome which is identifiable. Allele is different in the sense that it refer to a particular DNA sequence at a certain locus. What makes is distinct is that more than a single allele can be found in one loci.
Difference between Allele and Locus
There are some people, who upon hearing the word genetics, would automatically think that it is a really difficult, tiring and complicated topic to talk about. However learning a few basic things would bring one a long way.
