Difference Between Android Lollipop 5.0 and 5.1.1

Key Difference – Android Lollipop 5.0 vs 5.1.1

The Key difference between the Android Lollipop 5.0 and 5.1.1 are the updates that have further enhanced the performance and stability of the Android 5.1.1 operating system. Let us take a closer look at what both of the operating system platforms have to offer.

Android Lollipop 5.0 – Features Review

The Android Lollipop 5.0 was released after Android 4.4. This is considered to be a big step forward from its previous version. This is one of the major changes that took place in the mobile operating system in the recent past. The improvements include speed, beauty, slickness and extended battery life. The interface on this version is simple but gives a premium, and useful feel.

Material Interface

The new interface named ‘material interface’ has a refreshing look which add more responsiveness, realistic lighting, and motion. The interface is a very important feature as this is the place where the user directly interacts with the phone. This could even be the feature that can make or break the users’ desire to use this on a device.

The difference from the previous version includes redesign in the soft keys and google app icons. The main feature of the user interface is that it has been made in a user-friendly manner, and the functions of each application can be recognized easily.

On the bottom of the screen, there is an arrow which takes you back, a circle that represents the home button and a square for the multitasking menu. The antinational effects are less, and the speed and the inertia have been increased. The backgrounds have been made in a more physical texture than a digital one. This has reduced the more technical, digital part of the interface and made it more down to earth. Another improvement in the interface is that the soft key comes with shadows which gives the keys a 3D look and feel.

Apps Menu

It is similar to the Google Now interface on Nexus 5. The main difference between this menu and previous versions is that the translucent style has been dropped for a simpler look. The background is white in color. The main reason for the white background is the ability to differentiate the icons more clearly from the background. The icons of the apps have also been darkened to make it more visible on the white background.

Lock Screen

This is a new addition to the Android Lollipop 5.0 version. If there are no new notifications, you will see a clock, or if you are charging, an indicator will be showing how long it will take for the battery to be charged to full capacity. The moment a notification is received, notifications will begin to stack up one over the other in the form of white rectangles. Up to five can be shown at once and you do not need to leave the lock screen. This is a disableable feature if the user is not comfortable with it.

Toggles

The toggle feature comes with a home screen menu which drops down and a brightness toggle. It can be brought to the screen by swiping down to hide the notifications and swipe down again to pull down the control panel consisting of features. This panel has a lot of features which cannot be customized. The brightness slider and the auto rotate feature are few examples.

There is no silent mode but by pressing the volume button a small menu pops up that can silence all notifications, only the notifications that are not important, indefinitely or for a time period preferred by the user.  This can be considered a do not disturb mode rather than a silent mode.

Gmail, Calendar

Google slides app was launched for the first time with the Android Lollipop 5.0.This is useful for making PowerPoint-like slideshows. Another addition is the Google Fit app to monitor your health. It only is able to monitor weight and the activity but does not have features like heart rate. Gmail and calendar have had a slight upgrade on the looks, but the apps and the Android Lollipop 5.0 are both separate quantities which mean it is not inbuilt, and an older version can exist with the current OS.

Profiles

Now, like profiles on PC’s, Android Lollipop 5.0 can support different profiles on the phone. The Guest mode enables for a temporary profile which will block anyone from important personal information.

Cross-platform

The Android Lollipop 5.0 enables the user to start a task on one device and finish it on another. This can be done on both phones and tablets and hopefully in wearable  devices in the future.

Performance

The Android Lollipop 5.0 has switched from the DALVIK runtime to the ART runtime. This has speeded up loading of the apps and switching between apps. The OS is also capable of supporting 64-bit architecture. This enables more data to be processed at a given time period. This will in turn provide more responsive applications and speeds at the same time. The graphics are supported using Open GL 3.1.

Android Lollipop 5.1.1 – Features Review

The Android lollipop 5.1.1 is the latest version of android update which was released for various brands of smartphones. This update includes fixes and features. In this section, we will discuss what to expect from this Android update for smartphone devices. It is noteworthy that this may be the last update of the android lollipop version. The next Android version is rumored to be the Android M.

This update started appearing on Nexus devices in the month of April. After a lapse of a few months, updates have started to roll out for the Samsung models. Although the Android Lollipop 5.1.1 update has been released, it has been overshadowed by Samsung Note 5 and Samsung S6 edge plus rumors. Even today, many devices still run on the Android 5.0.2 platform although this update has emerged.

Now we will take a closer look at the new update and what we could also expect in future of Android operating systems.

Look

The Lollipop 5.1.1 provides us a very interactively designed interface which is very user-friendly. The interface is crisp and smooth. There are also shadows, vibrant colors, bright and fluid movement of content which is a delight to use.  This is undoubtedly the best version of Android OS, released so far. With all these high-tech features, the interface is yet simple and smooth, which is a key feature.

Setup

Even though you will be upgrading to the new android Lollipop version, it still keeps check of the earlier preferences like installed apps, Wi-Fi, wallpaper and locations which will be a convenient feature, so that you do not need to setup the whole phone again. By tapping between a Kit Kat device and an Android Lollipop device, the new phone can be set up with all the previous settings used on the Kit Kat device.

Sync

The Android Lollipop 5.1.1 has the ability to sync with many android devices like smartphone, tablets, and smart watches. Now it is also able to support TVs and even the car. You will be able to start a task on one device and finish the same task on another device which is a convenient feature. The Google account is able to sync all documents, photos, music with all the other android device giving every device the opportunity to sync and access all content on all the devices.

Security

The security on the phone has been tightened with the use of encryption, privacy on data if the device is lost or stolen, and now it also includes malware protection. Android smart lock is also a feature that render pairing with trusted devices much simpler. The trusted device can be accessed without the need to reenter the PIN again and again. The Multi-user mode lets you create individual profiles for family members, whereas the guest mode shields sensitive information from display on the screen when it is handed down to a friend or colleague. Screen pin lets the user only access selected apps that have been pinned to the screen by the mobile device owner.

Communication

This feature can be used in three modes. The priority mode can determine which messages, notifications are important and displayed while the less important ones can be set to wait in the background for later retrieval. Lock screen notification is another mode that  let selected messages be displayed on the lock screen and relied upon from the lock screen itself. Interruptions subside is a cool feature which lets the user select the time when he does not want to receive a notification or phone call. This is great as the user is not disturbed, and he does not have to leave the work he is engaged in.

Battery saver mode

The battery life can be extended by 90 min with the use of this device. This also displays the estimated time left to charge the battery to capacity if it is plugged into a power source.

Image Quality

RAW support comes with the OS, which is great news for photographers as this means that it is able to retain all detail and information which can be edited using an image editing software.

Audio

The audio can be amplified and enhanced with the use of connections to speakers, amps, mixers, and microphones.
