Jiu Jitsu vs Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Jiu Jitsu (or Ju Jutsu) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are two forms of martial arts that originated from Japan during the Feudal era. Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu deals with close range fighting techniques that defeat larger opponents. It needs concentration to think ahead of the opponent’s moves and use the opponent’s own aggression to their disadvantage.
What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is one of the oldest forms of martial art that exists today. Also Known as Ju Jutsu, the art’s core involves greatly in countering opponents’attacks using strikes, joint locks, and a series of throws techniques. It gained popularity among women of different ages when it came to fighting and countering against men harassing them in the streets especially during the night. Jiu Jutsu is considered to be the father of Aikido and Judo.
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has some similarity with Jiu Jitsu as it also deals with larger opponents. However, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on ground fighting (taking the opponent down and attacking from the top position), submission (inducing severe pain to the opponent that may lead to unconsciousness or even death) and grappling. This form of martial art gained more popularity when Royce Gracie, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master, won several UFC Championships in 1990s.
What is the difference between Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu began during the 17th century when a Chinese (Chen Yuan Ping) showed the techniques to three ronins (Japanese samurai with no master or lord) whereas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu began with Mitsuyo Maeda (a Japanese Judo master) traveled to Brazil in 1914. He was helped by businessman Gastao Gracie to get established in Brazil and in return taught Judo (originated from Jiu Jitsu) to Gracie’s son. Jiu Jitsu’s specialties are joint locks and various throw techniques while in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu it focuses in submission holds, ground fighting, and grappling.
Today, Jiu Jitsu is less popular compared to its child Judo. There are still few others who practice and teach Jiu Jitsu, but not that many compared to Judo which is present almost around the globe. In UFC, majority of the fighters have studied or enrolled in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since they find it very effective, especially the submission and grappling techniques.
