Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck

More are more people today are resorting to cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and tummy tuck to get rid of unwanted fat and loose skin around abdominal area. These are people who do not succeed in their efforts to lose fat through dieting and workouts. Liposuction and tummy tuck are invasive methods that aim to reduce the flab around abdominal area making a person look fitter and smarter. Though aiming fat reduction, there are differences in these two surgical methods that will be highlighted in this article.

What is Liposuction?

As the name indicates, liposuction is a surgical method where small incision is made around the waist and a tube is inserted through which layers of fat beneath the skin is sucked out. The tube that is called cannula pushes through layers of fat breaking them down that makes it easier to suction the fat. Liposuction produces best results in specific areas of the body where there is excess fat deposited such as love handles around the waist and saddle bags that are on the thighs of obese individuals. These are areas of body where extra flab gets localized and is resistant to workouts and dieting.

Liposuction produces good results with individuals who are not very obese but overweight having localized fat in some specific areas of their bodies. Another factor that is necessary is for the patients to have firm and elastic skin which is not the case with old patients and as such they are not suggested to go for liposuction.

What is Tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck is also referred to as abdominoplasty. It is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat around the abdomen thus tightening the abdominal wall. Those who find themselves unattractive because of a protruding abdomen that is a result of various factors, go for tummy tuck. In some cases, skin becomes loose and saggy after pregnancy. This looks unattractive and is hard to get rid of. In other cases, people who are very fat and lose weight suddenly experience loose skin around their waist and abdomen. For such people, tummy tuck is a great option to come back into shape. Older individuals who experience sagging of skin due to age are good contenders for tummy tuck as it does not require patients to have firm and elastic skin.

In brief:

Tummy Tuck vs Liposuction

• Though both tummy tuck and liposuction are surgical procedures to get rid of excess fat, liposuction is less painful as fat is sucked out and very small incisions are made around the abdominal area.

• More bleeding in tummy tuck because of large incisions makes a patient weak and he recovers in a couple of weeks only. There is also problem of displacement of belly button.

• Liposuction is better for younger patients as it requires skin to be firm and elastic while tummy tuck is suitable even for older patients.

• Tummy tuck is preferred when a large amount of fat is to be removed while for persons who have specific areas of excess fat, liposuction is better.
