Onsite vs Offsite Storage

Onsite storage and offsite storage refer to different ways of storing data. There were times, not so long ago, when even 50 GB hard drive was considered more than enough as there were not enough media files for storage that could fill up the system. Then there were not so many safety concerns as there are today in the form of hackers, malware, and other dangers from internet. This is why it is imperative to make up backup copy of all the critical data, files and information that you may have. It is better to remain prepared for the worst and safeguard your valuable data rather than feel sorry after you have lost it because of any inexplicable reason. Now data storage can take place both onsite as well as offsite. This article intends to find the difference between onsite and offsite storage with their features and pros and cons.

Offsite storage refers to storage of data on a remote server with the help of internet. On the other hand, onsite storage refers to storing your data in storage devices such as DVD’s, CD’s and external hard drives. Both methods are commonly used for storage of data. While some prefer to rely upon old method of backing up through DVD’s and external hard drives, others have started using remote server to keep their data safely.

In terms of cost, onsite storage is cheaper than offsite storage as you just need to buy storage devices while in offsite storage, you have to use the services of a 3rd party server and also bear bandwidth costs. If cost is a factor for you, you can go for onsite storage.

In terms of efficiency also, it is easier to get to your data when you are using onsite storage as compared to offsite storage. There are delays in recovery when using offsite storage as there are issues of internet speeds.

It is security where offsite storage scores over onsite storage. If you choose onsite storage, there are always issues of security as there are others who use the system and can get to your data. But in case of offsite storage, the data is out of reach of any person and you can be absolutely sure about its safety and your privacy. So is security is a big concern, you need to opt for offsite storage.

Today, there are many professional companies that are providing data backup services through a 3rd party remote server, and if you have data that is highly confidential, you can rest assured about its safety if you use the services of these companies.
