Permitted vs Granted
 

The slight difference between permitted and granted makes way for much confusion, especially in written English. This is due to the reason that both of them are almost similar when it comes to their meanings. However, one should not forget that there is a difference between permitted and granted. The word permit comes from the verb permitted while the word granted comes from the verb grant. Therefore, if we take a look at the two verbs permit and grant there are a number of facts to see. The word grant is used as a verb and a noun. In the same manner, the word permit is also used as a noun and a verb. The origin of grant is in Middle English while the origin of permit is in Late Middle English.

What does Permitted mean?

The word permitted has its noun form in the word permission and hence it is used in the sense of ‘allow’ as in the sentences given below.

He was permitted to leave the premises.

She was permitted to look into the text book.

In both the sentences given above, you can find that the word permitted is used in the sense of ‘allow’ and hence you get the idea from the first sentence that he was allowed to leave the premises. In the same way, you get the idea from the second sentence that she was allowed to look into the text book. Unlike the word grant which is followed by either preposition ‘by’ or ‘of’, the word permitted is often followed by the preposition ‘by’ and sometimes by ‘to’.

Difference Between Permitted and Granted

What does Granted mean?

The word granted, on the other hand, is derived from its noun form grant and hence it is used in the sense of ‘give’ as in the sentences given below:

He was granted leave for two days by the Principal.

She was granted bail by the Court.

In both the sentences given above, you can see that the word grant is used in the sense of ‘give’ and hence you get the idea from the first sentence that he was given a leave for two days by the Principal. In the same way, you get the idea from the second sentence that the Court gave her bail. It is interesting to note that the word grant is often followed by the preposition ‘by’ and sometimes by the preposition ‘of’.

What is the difference between Permitted and Granted?

• The word permitted has its noun form in the word permission. Therefore, it is used in the sense of ‘allow.’

• The word granted, on the other hand, is derived from its noun form grant. As a result, it is used in the sense of ‘give.’

• The word grant is often followed by the preposition ‘by’ and sometimes by the preposition ‘of’.

• On the other hand, the word permitted is often followed by the preposition ‘by’ and sometimes by ‘to’.

These are the differences between the two words, permitted and granted.
