SMS and Viber SMS both are instant messing services to communicate each other. SMS stands for Short Message Service used in Mobile and Fixed Telecommunication Networks. SMS is limited to send 160 Characters whereas in Viber SMS you can send more.
Viber is an iPhone application that allows you to make free calls and send SMS to users who have viber installed on their iphones. At the moment iPhone users can download viber from apple store and install on their iphones. One good thing on this application is, instead of going through registration, it uses your mobile number as username and registers automatically and will drop a verification code to confirm your number.
This application uses the same address book in your iphone and show a tag against contacts if they are registered viber users. Then you can call them for free but it will use your data plan.Viber users could be anywhere in the world if they are connected to internet.
Viber is available only for iPhones now but expected to be released for Android Market as well. Viber recently (Late March) introduced Short Message like service for free. Basically these messaging services are not new but the good thing is, since viber uses mobile no as username the instant messaging becomes like SMS. This messaging is in between email and instant messaging but it pushes the messages to user handsets via Internet instantly and the user is identified by mobile no.
Difference Between Regular SMS and Viber SMS
(1)SMS is a mobile and fixed line standard to send short messages up to 160 characters via fixed and mobile networks but Viber SMS is an instant messaging kind of service introduced initially for iPhone.
(2)SMS uses service providers network thus its being charged whereas Viber SMS uses internet as transmission media thus it’s free. But it will consume data plan. Texting will not consume much data.
(3)You can only send 160 Characters in SMS but in Viber you can send more characters.
(4)International SMS are quite expensive still but Viber SMS or messaging is free around the world.
