Homeostasis vs Metabolism
All organisms share certain fundamental properties such as cellular organization, sensitivity, growth, development, reproduction, regulation, and homeostasis. These properties basically put the foundation to life on Earth. Homeostasis and metabolism are two major processes that an organism must maintain and process during its lifetime. Without these processes, the organisms would not have survived.
All living organisms must maintain their internal body conditions constantly without changing it with the environmental conditions. The ability of an organism to adjust itself to restrain the external changes and maintain the dynamic constant state of functioning is known as homeostasis.
Homeostasis is essential for life because most of the regulatory mechanisms of many advanced organisms (vertebrates) are involved and maintained by the homeostasis. In many organisms, the nervous system controls the process, homeostasis. This is done by the impulses delivered via the nervous system. Homeostasis mechanisms regulate heart rate, breathing rate, blood glucose levels and body temperatures in many advanced organisms. The advantage of homeostasis is that it allows organisms to survive and function effectively in a broad range of environmental conditions.
All chemical reactions carried out in an organism are called metabolism. Organisms need energy for every action such as moving, breathing, thinking, blood circulation etc. To produce energy the body cells convert the fuel (food) into energy by chemical reactions. Some specific proteins in the body control these chemical reactions and certain body functions coordinate these reactions. Digestion and the transport of substances into cells and between cells is called intermediate metabolism.
Metabolism can be divided into two categories namely, catabolism and anabolism. In catabolism, energy is used to break down organic matter. In anabolism, energy is used to construct components like proteins and nucleic acids in the cells. Using a sequence of enzymes, one chemical is transformed into another chemical with a series of reaction steps. This series is organized into metabolic pathways. Here, the enzymes are very important because they allow these reactions to proceed quickly and efficiently.
Differences between Homeostasis and Metabolism
• Metabolism is the collection of all chemical reaction carried out in an organism. Homeostasis is the ability of maintaining the internal system of an organism in a dynamic constant functioning state.
• Unlike the homeostasis, metabolism can be divided into two categories namely, Anabolism and Catabolism.
• Due to metabolism of the body, certain properties of the internal properties (internal body temperature, pH etc) could be changed. Regulating and keeping these properties in constant level is done by homeostasis.
• Normally hormones involve controlling homeostatic regulations while enzymes involve as catalysis, and they control metabolic pathways.
• Metabolism determines whether substances are nutritious or poisonous.
• Specific proteins in the body control the metabolic reactions while nervous system controls the homeostatic regulations.
• Metabolic rate can be decreased or increased by the homeostasis regulation mechanisms, but homeostasis cannot be controlled by metabolism.
