Canon EOS 60D vs 7D | Compare EOS 60D vs 7D Features
The name canon stands apart when it comes to making DSLR’s, and both Canon EOS 60D and 7D represent the upper segment of DSLR made by the company. While EOS 7D was launched a year ago, EOS 60D has been introduced now. So it is natural for 60D to retain all the features of 7D, and also add some new features. Despite new features, 60D is $600 less in price, which makes people wonder whether it is beneficial to spend this extra amount of money on 7D. This article will highlight the difference between Canon EOS 60D and 7D to enable the users to choose one that is better suited for their requirements.
Both models have the same APS-C CMOS sensor that produces images at 18MP and have the same 3.0 inch LCD display. But while 60D uses Digic 4 processor, 7D makes use of Dual Digic 4 processors. This 4 channel readout from each processor is doubled in 7D that allows for extra speed of 8fps burst rate. However, both models have the same ISO range of 100-6400 for standard modes with an extended high setting of 12800.
It is the auto focus system where the differences are glaring. 7D offers an extra 10 AF points over 60D’s nine point arrangement. This allows for a more precise positioning in 7D.
When it comes to high speed shooting, 7D has an edge over 60D with its 8fps burst rate which is only 5.3 fps burst rate in 60D. 7D can maintain this speed for a greater number of JPEG files. Using micro SD cards, 7D can stack up to 631 JPEG images, whereas 60D stops after 97. As far as raws are concerned, 60D slows down after 17, while 7D manages 28.
The range of shooting modes give a clue as to whom canon intends the two models for. 7D has two additional custom settings and a creative Auto mode. On the other hand, 60D adds a series of scene modes covering 5 of the main subjects, and also has movie and no flash options.
The two models are also different when it comes to use of memory cards. While 7D sticks with compact flash, 60D makes use of micro SD cards.
As far as size is concerned, 7D is taller and a bit heavier. 60D has aluminum and polycarbonate body, while 7D is built up of magnesium alloy. 7D is about 100g heavier than 60D. Though magnesium alloy is stronger, aluminum body of 60D is sufficiently strong for non professional users.
One difference between the two models is in the movie/live view operation. While in 60D, this button is on the shooting dial, this mode can be accessed in any shooting mode on 7D using the live view button.
As far as viewfinder is concerned, while 7D provides 100% view from its viewfinder with a 1X magnification, 60D provides a reduced 96% view because of 0.95X magnification. This is one reason professionals go for 7D.
It is clear from the above analysis that both these models from Canon are high performing cameras with a lot of features in common and producing almost same, high quality images. If you are a non professional, saving those extra $600 and going in for 60D might be beneficial for you. But if you are a professional, you could take advantage of the better AF of 7D.
