Motorola Droid X2 vs HTC Thunderbolt

Motorola Droid X2 is a new additon to Verizon’s Droid series. The Android based Droid X2 by Motorola joins Droid Blue eye series. It runs Android 2.2 which will be upgraded to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and using Motoblur as the UI. Droid X2 features 4.3″ qHD (960×540) TFT LCD and holds a powerful 8MP camera. HTC Thundebolt is the first 4G phone for Verizon’s LTE network. It runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) with HTC Sense 2.0. Both Motorola Droid X2 and HTC Thunderbolt sport 4.3 inch display and run skinned Android. However Droid X2 display has a higher resolution than Thunderbolt display. One of other difference is that HTC Thunderbolt is powered by 1GHz Qualcomm processor while it’s 1GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor that powers Motorola Droid X2. Another difference between Motorola Droid X2 and HTC Thunderbolt is that while HTC Thunderbolt is a 4G phone configured for Verizon’s 4G-LTE network Motorola Droid X2 is a 3G phone that support Verizon’s CDMA EvDO Rev.A network.

Motorola Droid X2

Motorola Droid X2 is a dual-core phone with 4.3″ qHD (960 x 540) TFT LCD display, 8MP camera with dual LED flash and it can capture HD video in 720p. The camera features include auto/continuous focus, panorama shot, multishot and geotagging. For text input it has swype technology in addition to the multi-touch virtual keyboard.

For media sharing it supports DLNA and HDMI mirroring and for social networking it has integrated Facebook, twitter and MySpace. For location based services it has A-GPS with Google Maps and if you want you can share your location with Google Latitude. The phone also can be turned in to a Wi-Fi hotspot (separate subscription required to use this feature), you can share your 3G connection with five other Wi-Fi enabled devices.

It also has other standard features like Adobe flash player for seamless browsing, tap/pinch to zoom, wireless connection via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Customizable homescreen and resizable widgets, Android Market for application and Verizon offers Vcast Music. The phone is Enterprise-ready with security features.

HTC Thunderbolt

HTC Thunderbolt that sports a 4.3 inches WVGA display offers fast performance at 4G speed with 1GHz Qualcomm MSM 8655 processor in tandem with MDM9600 modem for multimode network support and 768 MB RAM. This handset has a 8 MP camera at the rear with dual LED flash that can capture HD video in 720p. It also holds a 1.3 MP VGA camera in the front for video calling. The phone runs Android 2.2 (upgradeable to 2.3) with HTC Sense 2.0 that offers fast boot and enhanced personalization option and new camera effects. It also has an internal storage capacity of 8 GB and preinstalled 32 GB microSD and built in kickstand for handsfree media viewing.

Qualcomm claims that they are the industry first to release LTE/3G Multimode Chipsets. 3G multimode is required for ubiquitous data coverage and voice services.

With 4.3 inches WVGA display, high speed processor, 4G speed, Dolby Surround Sound, DLNA streaming and kickstand for hands free viewing HTC Thunderbolt will give you the pleasure of live music environment.

HTC Thunderbolt has integrated Skype mobile with video calling, you can make video call easily like a standard voice call. And with the mobile hotspot capability you can share your 4G connection with 8 other Wi-Fi enabled devices. The featured applications on Thunderbolt include 4G LTE optimized apps such as EAs Rock Band, Gamelofts Lets Golf! 2, Tunewiki and Bitbop.

The negative side of HTC Thunderbolt is its weak battery life.

HTC Sense

The latest HTC Sense, which HTC calls as the social intelligence gives a unique experience to users with its many small but intelligent applications. The improved HTC Sense enables fast boot and has added many new multimedia features. HTC Sense has enhanced camera application with many camera features like full screen viewfinder, touch focus, onscreen access to camera adjustments and effects. The other features include HTC locations with on-demand mapping (service depend on the carrier), integrated e-reader that support text search from Wikipedia, Google, Youtube or dictionary. Browsing is made enjoyable with features like magnifier, quick look up to look for a word, Wikipedia search, Google search, YouTube search, Google translate and Google dictionary. You can add a new window for browsing or move from one to another windows by zooming in and out. It also offers a good music player, which is better than the standard Android music player. There are many other features with htc sense that give a beautiful experience to users.

Verizon 4G-LTE

HTC Thunderbolt is compatible with Verizon’s 4G-LTE 700 and 3G- CDMA EvDO Rev.A networks. It is the first 4G phone to run on Verizons 4G-LTE network. Verizon promises 5 to 12 Mbps download speeds and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps in 4G Mobile Broadband coverage area.

Verizon’s pricing and availability

Both the phones are availble at Verizon’s online store. Droid X2 pre-order starts on 16 May 2011 and launch on 26 May 2011.

Verizon is offering Motorola Droid X2 for $200 on a new two year contract. While it has priced Thunderbolt at $250 with a new two year contract. Customers have to subscribe to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and a 4G LTE data package. Nationwide Talk plans starts from $39.99 monthly access and an unlimited 4G LTE data plan begins at $29.99 monthly access.
