The key difference between phenylamine and aminobenzene is that the name phenylamine describes that aniline has a phenyl group and an amine group whereas the name aminobenzene describes that aniline has an amino group substituted to a benzene ring.

Both terms phenylamine and aminobenzene are common names for the compound aniline. Therefore, these are two names for the same compound. Furthermore, the only difference between phenylamine and aminobenzene is the detail each name gives about the structure of this compound.

What is Phenylamine?

Phenylamine is a common name for the compound, aniline. The name describes that aniline has a phenyl group and an amine group. Aniline is an aromatic organic compound having the chemical formula C6H5NH2. It has a phenyl group (a benzene ring) with an attached amine group (-NH2). Furthermore, this is the simplest aromatic amine. Besides, this compound is slightly pyramidalized and is flatter than an aliphatic amine. Its molar mass is 93.13 g/mol. Moreover, the melting point is −6.3 °C, and boiling point is 184.13 °C. It has the odour of rotten fish.

Industrially, we can produce this compound via two steps. The first step is the nitration of benzene with a concentrated mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid (at 50 to 60 °C). It gives nitrobenzene. Then, we can hydrogenate nitrobenzene into aniline in the presence of a metal catalyst. The reaction is as follows:

Furthermore, this compound is mainly used in the manufacture of polyurethane precursors. Additionally, we can use this compound in the production of dyes, drugs, explosive materials, plastics, photographic and rubbery chemicals, etc.

Aminobenzene is another term for the compound known by aniline or phenylamine. The name describes that aniline has an amino group substituted to a benzene ring.
