Even when there exists some sort of difference between author and writer, author and writer are two terms in English language that are often confused due to the closeness on their meanings. Author is a word that is used both as a noun as well as a verb. However, one should remember that author as a verb is well established, especially in North America, some traditionalists object to the use of this word as a verb. Author has origins in Middle English. Originated from the Old English word wrītere, writer is a very popular noun in the English language. Even phrases such as writer’s block and writer’s cramp exist.

Who is an Author?

Author is a person who writes books on a regular basis. In short, it can be said that the writer of books alone can be termed as an author. Moreover, a fiction writer is normally called an author. An author does not write quite regularly. In other words, an author does not write on a daily basis. The aim of an author is the completion of the book that he writes. Once he completes writing the book he can be called author. He may or may not continue writing thereafter.

Who is a Writer?

On the other hand, a writer is a person who contributes to magazines, newspapers, journals and the like through his writings. In addition to writing for magazines, newspapers, journals and the like a writer writes books also. A writer is the writer of any written matter including poems and short stories. While a fiction writer is normally called an author, a non-fiction writer is normally called a writer. Thus, it can be said that author is the subset of writer. A writer regularly writes. In other words, it can be said that a writer has the habit of writing on a daily basis. Moreover, a writer continues to write until the last breath of his life. He does not stop writing altogether. Once a project gets completed, a writer would start writing for the next project and the process goes on. Occasionally he produces books too in the form of poems, short stories, novels and the like. He writes science fiction and non-fiction too.

What is the difference between Author and Writer?

• Author is a person who writes books on a regular basis. On the other hand, a writer is a person who contributes to magazines, newspapers, journals and the like through his writings. This is the main difference between author and writer.

• In short, it can be said that the writer of books alone can be termed as an author whereas a writer is the writer of any written matter including poems and short stories.

• Another important difference between author and writer is that a fiction writer is normally called an author. On the other hand, a non-fiction writer is normally called a writer.

• Author is the subset of writer.

• A writer regularly writes whereas an author does not write quite regularly.

• The aim of an author is the completion of the book that he writes. However, a writer writes as long as possible.
