ViewSonic ViewPhone 3 vs Apple iPhone 4S | Speed, Performance and Features Reviewed | Full Specs Compared
Some people like to view the mobile phone market as a structure which was built slowly and still been built. They define the fundamentals of the smartphone technology as the basement of the structure. On top of the same fundamentals, a lot of alternate structures are built. Sometimes, vendors go back and change a technology that was used and replace it with a new technology. In terms of the structure, this is emphasized as demolishing a lower level of the structure and replacing that part with a new structure to match the structural integrity. It doesn’t matter how hard you try, but it makes the whole structure unstable. Similarly, that’s the case in the smartphone market too. If a certain technology is considered as outdated and is replaced by another, the predecessors lose all the support from the vendors. The best example for this is the transition from Analog phones to the Digital phones where Analog phone owners were lost in the transition.
In this model of the smartphone market, there are top builders who initiate a chain of small builders to follow and finish up the work they have started. These top builders are the leading smartphone vendors in the market like Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG and Motorola etc. They introduce unique features, which are then adopted and completed by other vendors. Today we are going to talk about one of the top builders and another builder who is entering the market. Apple Inc. has always given something unique to the industry and they are much accredited for the user experience they provide. On the other hand, the new vendor we are going to talk about today is much accredited for the great color reproduction of a monitor which is only partly related to the industry. ViewSonic has diversified into smartphone industry as well, and their ViewPhone 3 is what we are going to compare against Apple iPhone 4S.
ViewSonic ViewPad 3
It is true that ViewSonic is an emerging vendor, but we should give it a chance to prove itself. ViewPhone 3 would be an ideal chance to get an idea on how much thought they have put onto designing a handset. It has 3.5 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen featuring a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels at a pixel density of 165ppi. It feels like and average smartphone and fits well in your hand, but ViewPhone 3 has a cheap look on it probably due to the plastic hulk. It is a dual SIM edition which may serve well for some business professionals. It is powered by 800MHz ARM 11 single core processor and 512MB of RAM. The operating system is Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread. The processor has nothing special to offer other than being a low end computing device. The operating system, however, works surprisingly well in this hardware although there are many hiccoughs introduced by the unnecessary UI modifications by ViewSonic. If this handset were to come in Vanilla Android, it would have performed much better.
ViewSonic ViewPhone 3 has 5MP camera with autofocus and geo tagging. It can also record videos. There doesn’t seem to be any internal storage, but ViewPhone 3 supports microSD cards up to 32GB. The connectivity is defined by HSDPA. Since it’s a dual SIM phone, only the first SIM would offer the HSDPA connectivity. It also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for continuous connectivity. Other than these, it seems like a normal mobile phone without any shining armor to glitter among a crowd. The battery is rated at 1500mAh although we can’t comment on its life span without the usage statistics.
Apple iPhone 4S
Apple iPhone 4S has the same look and feel of iPhone 4 and comes in both black and white. The stainless steel built gives it an elegant and expensive style which appeals to the users. It also is almost the same size as iPhone 4 but slightly heavier weighing 140g. It features the generic Retina display which Apple is extremely proud of. It comes with a 3.5 inches LED-backlit IPS TFT Capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors and scores the highest resolution as per Apple which is 640 x 960 pixels. The pixel density of 330ppi is extremely high that Apple claims that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. This obviously results in crisp text and stunning images.
iPhone 4S comes with 1GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU in Apple A5 chipset and 512MB RAM. Apple claims this delivers two times more power and seven times better graphics. It is also highly energy efficient which enables Apple to boast an outstanding battery life. iPhone 4S comes in 3 storage options; 16/32/64GB without the option of expanding the storage with a microSD card. It stays in touch at all times with HSDPA at 14.4Mbps and HSUPA at 5.8Mbps. In terms of camera, iPhone has an improved camera of 8MP that can record 1080p HD videos @ 30 frames per second. It has a LED flash and touch to focus function along with Geo-tagging with A-GPS. The front VGA camera enables the iPhone 4S to make use of its application Facetime, which is a video calling application.
While iPhone 4S is graced with generic iOS applications, it comes with Siri, the most advanced digital personal assistant up to date. Now the iPhone 4S user can use voice to operate the phone, and Siri understands natural language. It also understands what the user meant, that is Siri is a context aware application. It has its own personality, tightly coupled with the iCloud infrastructure. It can do basic tasks like setting up an alarm or reminder for you, sending a text or email, schedule meetings, follow your stock, make a phone call etc. It can also perform complex tasks like finding information for a natural language query, getting directions, and answering your random questions.
Apple is best known for its unbeatable battery life; thus, it would be normal to expect it to have a fabulous battery life. With the Li-Pro 1432mAh battery it has, iPhone 4S promises a talk time of 14h 2G and 8h 3G. Recently the users have been making complaints about the battery life and Apple has announced that it’s working on a fix for that while their update for iOS5 has partially solved the problem. We can stay tuned for updates and expect the Technological Innovator to come up with a fix for the problem at hand soon.

It has a better processor and a chipset as well as an operating system that is tailor made for the hardware specs. iPhone 4S has an amazing display panel with ultra high pixel density which ViewPhone 3 can’t even think about beating. The IPS TFT panel can be used in the broad daylight which explains the brightness it has, and if you compare iPhone 4S and ViewPhone 3 neck to neck, the appetite to invest in ViewPhone 3 would go away without any second thoughts. Apple iPhone 4S also offers better optics and other features like personal digital assistant Siri. Additionally, the expensive looking hulk and the slim and sleek design are what make iPhone 4S stand out from the rest of the crowd.
Every detail points towards investing in iPhone 4S, but the tradeoff is the price. To be frank, ViewSonic ViewPhone 3 is a budget smartphone and never meant to challenge iPhone 4S. So it would logically follow that ViewPhone 3 is rather low on price. To be exact, Apple iPhone 4S is offered at a price that is more than twice of the price of ViewPhone 3. Thus, you may need to reconsider your priorities in obtaining a smartphone before you make the investment decision.
